Bottled Milk

October 19th, 2006 @ 12:29 pm by Mrs. Strawberry

I had this vision in my head to have chocolate chip cookies and milk in old fashioned glass bottles as my wedding favor. I thought it sounded so vintage and cute. However, the logistics of it all may make the idea but a dream. I ordered sample glass bottles online and they arrived last week. While they are very cute…I’m starting to second guess myself. Friends and family have voiced concerns that no one will take the milk and that it isn’t something that will keep well. My bubble is totally burst! :(

Sorry to hear about that :-( I think it’s a really cute idea, but I agree that it’s maybe a bit more trouble than it’s worth–most people have milk in their fridges at home, and since so many only drink skim or only drink 1% or whatever, it would be impossible to please everyone.

You could try some cute alternatives though. If you still want to do the milk bottle thing, you could make your own cappuccino mix (I’ve got a recipe for dry cappuccino mix if you want it) and put it in the bottles, with a little tag saying “Mix X teaspoons w/ hot water and enojoy cappuccino with your cookies” or something. Just one thought :-)

Miss Lemon says:

Can you have them at the shower? :) I think it’s an adorable idea, but it might be a logisitic hassle at the reception. But…if you kept them in ice…?

marclovesme says:

Sorry! : (

I also think the idea is adorable, but I guess it isn’t really feasible or practical.

I do think you should keep the cookies (yum!).

4.
MCRBride says:

Yeah I probably wouldn’t take milk as a favor either.

Joy says:

It is a really cute idea…but I agree that most people wouldn’t really want to take the milk. That and milk that isn’t in the fridge sounds kind of scary.

I like the idea of a drink mix to go with the cookies. You could do the capuccino or hot chocolate or something.

Miss Strawberry says:

I should have mentioned that my venue would keep the milk cold in a fridge until the end of the night. :)

Miss Lime says:

very cute idea, but yes seems difficult, logistically, for a reception.

maybe you could keep them refrigerator, then have the caterer or coordinator bring them out on ice at the exit as people are leaving.

there’s a great place in LA that delivers freshly-baked cookies and milk. they’re pricey, but if you have a service like that in your area, you could have them time a delivery for near the end of your reception and give them as parting gifts/favors. ooh, i think i’ll write an entry about them now…

8.
Samantha says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t take the milk, unless it was cold.

9.
Aliya says:

What about negotiating with your caterer or venue to serve milk and cookies as your late-night snack? You might have to forgo the vintage bottle idea, but ice-cold milk and cookies could definitely keep the party going for a couple more hours!

Mary says:

I had the same exact experience! I thought it was the cutest and best idea ever and it only got shot down by everyone I told… I guess that’s how wedding planning goes though! I still like the idea of food favors though- maybe home-made cookies or brownies in cellophane bags.

Shellsbells says:

I actually had the same idea as you and we nixed the milk idea as well. Actually our favors did not go as much as we thought they would - we did Berger style (chocolate top cookies a balitmore favorite) and Black & White cookies (NY must) and then we had heart shaped sugar cookies for those non-chocolate people.

A lot of cookies were leftover because we had just way too much dessert. We served cake & dessert and the reception site also put chocolates on the table. It was just too much.

We put some of the cookies out at brunch the next morning and the chocolate top ones went home to my parents who as of October 7 have finished them!

Miss Orange says:

Love the idea, but also agree with the comments previously. In addition, some of my friends are lactoid intolerant and so, that should be put into consideration. Same thing with nuts allergies.

Shellsbells says:

Here is a link to a picture with our bags. We also used this poem on the table compliments of my mom, the frustrated poet.

Thanks for celebrating with us today have a safe a trip or if you can stay take a cookie or two at our cookie stop, our favorites as you can see are sugar, black whites and chocolate tops.

peachy says:

oh, i TOTALLY think it’s doable!! just get large galvanized buckets and fill them with ice water and put the little milk bottles in there. that would be super cute! maybe cut down on the # of bottles, and have extra cookies… not everyone will take some, but i think enough would. :-)

15.
Miss Strawberry says:

Ooooh! I love the bucket idea!!!

16.
Tea says:

maybe you can fill the milk bottles with candy, like caramels or other candies you can get in bulk online, like candydirect.com or candywarehouse.com.

or you can even fill them up with cookie crisps cereal! actually, i would love that.

Deco says:

I’m not a milk fan, so I’ll cop to that at the start. My main problem with the plan is that the milk isn’t in the container it came in. Milk transferred into a new container (albeit a cute one) … then with wedding day rush-type refrigeration. Its just icky to me. In SO many ways. Sorry!

18.
NL says:

Since your venue has a fridge, I think the milk idea is completely doable! I would totally take the milk and cookies.

19.
Deco says:

Also … if you DO ice them, in buckets or whatever … people are going to be leaving with WET FAVORS. Against their clothing, car seats etc. If you have bags to put them in, the wet bottle will soak through the bag.

Listen: there’s a macabre creative writing maxim … “Kill Your Babies”. Sometimes the very thing you think is “the best/most/clever/aweomemist” is actually ruining your whole concept/thruline/plot. Be ruthless with yourself & your ideas so the overall concept/event doesn’t suffer!

e says:

how about doing a cookie recipe in those bottles? mix the dry ingredients with water and bake!!! :) :)

21.
Tamara says:

Why don’t you buy milk bath and fill the bottles? You could print up some really cute labels for them, too!

22.
whatabout... says:

fill the bottles with milk duds and have cookies. people will think its cute.

Jen says:

What about as a gift to the out-of-town guests? Our reception venue is a hotel, and are going to deliver baskets the night of the wedding. We got snacks at Sam’s Club, but I think the milk and cookies idea is totally more charming. And they could probably keep the milk cold until it was time to deliver the milk!

24.
JG says:

I like Tea’s idea of filling them with cookie crisps cereal.

Honestly, if I got a milk bottle full of milk as a favor, I would go to the bathroom & just dump out the milk so it would be easier to take it home.

I hope you don’t think we’re just shooting down your idea, Miss Strawberry. I think everyone agrees that the milk bottles are a cute idea - we just can’t decide what you should fill them up with.

susie says:

i was going to say milk bubble bath but sounds like someone already beat me to it!

26.
Jasmine says:

I think its adorable as well but perhaps not the most practical as some have mentioned already. I like the milk bubble bath that some people are suggesting though Just make sure they know its for a bath and not to drink! heehee

C says:

its a really cute bottle. how about putting something else in there… like soap, laundry detergent, or lotion? im trying to think of other liquids but im out of ideas. hehe

28.
weddingwishes says:

i think the idea is so cute! it’s too bad about the milk though.

29.
LA says:

Hmm, I like the buckets w/ice to keep the milk cold. Maybe bring the milk out before/with the cake? And serve cookies at the same time? I would LOVE milk with wedding cake and cookies!

Good luck Miss Strawberry, I’m sure you’ll think of the right thing for them!

winewednov says:

I think you should forgo the vintage bottles… and serve milk in those “kid” size containers that kinda look like mini milk containers. You could have regular and chocolate milk! I agree with an above comment that the reason it is icky to me is that it has been handled and not in the original container. Good Luck!

31.
Laura says:

Totally a cute idea. You could also put a white candy in the bottle, maybe white m&ms? I know it’s not the same. I also like the cookie & tea idea, but then you don’t get to use the cute bottles. Is there a place near you that sells already bottled small glass milk?

Miss Blueberry says:

e’s idea of the cookie recipe is cute, but I’ve thrown away more than a few of those myself…they never turn out as well as homemade cookies.

Milk bubble bath would definitely be cute too–or so would milk duds!

33.
christine says:

if you don’t mind, where did you get the bottles from?

34.
grace says:

Miss Strawberry,
I know you were going for the vintage look of the milk bottles for your favor but if you really want to pursue the “milk & cookie” idea, I think Horizon Organic individual serving milks (Starbucks carries these individual servings ) does not need to be refrigerated. Their special packaging does not require refrigeration. Costco (use to?) carry the chocolate flavor in their regular (non refrigerated) aisles. Here is their website
with the pic of the individual serving cartons (3rd row, 2nd picture). Hope this helps.

christine says:

i love love love this idea, but i just realized that so many ppl have different preferences for milk these days. from whole milk to low-fat or 2% or even organic and soy.. you’d either need to offer choices or accept the fact the some ppl won’t be satisfied.

37.
LaJuan says:

I would like to know where to get the milk. I would like to have as favor at my kid’s table!! Please tell me!

38.
Miss Strawberry says:

If you type in milk in the search function on wedding bee–there is a post on where to buy milk jars. I posted it before I was a bee! :) Hope that helps you, Lajuan! :)

Ophelia says:

The milk might not taste as great, but if you use powdered milk, it might not spoil as easily.

But I think the milk idea is very creative and original. I like that.

This is kinda random, but the most fresh and best tasting milk I’ve ever had was at Puyallap Fair this past year.. at the milk bar. The brand of the milk is Wilcox. I still remember its great tasting flavor… =)

This seems like a good spot to ask!

I too want to make cookies for a midnight snack. However, last weekend I tried to make a Martha Stewart cookie recipe (sugar cookie with icing & stamp on it) and it was a disaster - the stamps wouldn’t work at all. Martha Stewart I’m not!

I like the idea of having a bird stamp on my cookies…any ideas? Help - I’m trying to be a DIY bride but it’s not working :) Thanks so much!

Katherine says:

I think it’s a great idea. I want to do the same thing but have oreo’s instead of cookies. Also, I want to have the milk and oreo’s for dessert and not for them to take home. Would you like to do that? Where did you get the bottles? They are adorable! And I say…it’s your wedding…do what you want. :)

Christie says:

Where can I buy those cute old-fashioned milk bottles? I have searched everywhere and cannot find them. Please help!!
