Mineral Makeup

I know it’s become a trend in the here and now, but I have been using Bare Escentuals mineral makeup for the past two and a half years. My best friend/maid of honor, Jasmine, has been using it for even longer. We both love this stuff to death!

Mineral foundation is a must-have for girls on the go who want to look finished in a minimal amount of time. Applied a little bit differently than traditional powders or liquids, minerals must be buffed onto the skin in order to blend perfectly and have a flawless finish. The foundation resembles a loose, pigmented powder, but feels much different going on. To apply, you load up a brush with foundation (a verrry small amount will do), blow or tap to pack in, and buff on… which takes all of two minutes!

A good brush is essential for a smooth application (read: nicer than the ones that come in the kit). My favorite is B.E.’s Heavenly Face Brush. Other items from the line that I use semi-regularly (I don’t wear makeup every day) are the liner shadows, glimpses (these are shadows somewhere between matte and glitzy), and blushes.

Overall, it has a rather luminous finish due to the mica content, so I don’t know if I will use it for my wedding, but for any day when I feel I need a bit of help, it’s perfect. I have heard, though, that if you use the right amount of Mineral Veil, their loose powder, the finish is fine in pictures.

If you’re new to the makeup, B.E. has a starter kit available in their boutiques that runs for $75 or so, but is worth quite a bit more if you were to calculate the items included individually. I think every friend I’ve taken to the store has walked out with this kit (those salesgirls must love me!). Other mineral makeup brands I’ve heard good things about are Jane Iredale and Aromaleigh.

Have you tried mineral makeup before?

I like it a lot, too - but $25 just for the foundation is a bit much for me sometimes since I’m on such a strict budget. Still, my very breakout prone skin responds much better to it than any other makeup.

The only other problem is that I find it a bit messy and a little time consuming to apply. I sometimes wonder how much powder I’ve inhaled since I started using it - and I often have to dust myself off after (and it’s not from using too much - it’s from the “tap, tap, tap” before applying).

have been using bare escentuals for a few months (because it was mentioned on weddingbee, actually!) and i love love LOOOOOVVVEE it. =)
pressed powders and liquid foundations i’ve tried before just didn’t jive with my “natural girl” vibe and nothing ever really blended in the way I wanted it to. I am quite fairskinned and nothing ever really agreed with me except for L’oreal’s line of True Match makeup…
but bare escentuals definitely takes the cake. I love the ease of application and it just looks great. I don’t use a lot of it, but it definitely ‘perks me up’ after late nights at the office - and those have been happening quite often as of late…

Hi everyone! I’m excited to see how many people have tried B.E. We’ll see about those before and afters… ;)

D– here’s my little trick for keeping the whole process neat: applying very, very small amounts at a time. Instead of opening the jar and tapping some powder into the lid, I give the whole closed jar a few taps upside down, turn it over, and then open. Usually there is enough for 1/4 to 1/2 of my face in the lid. I swirl the brush in it until it’s gone, then, instead of tapping, I blow lightly into the brush to pack the minerals down into the bristles. Then it’s just buffing away, and repeating the process as necessary. :) A plus to this method — I never accidentally put on too much. Usually more buffing with a soft, thick brush gives me better results than adding more minerals.

i’ve tried and liked it but found it to be slightly of a cakey tone for my skin. a lot of my friends use it and it looks fabulous on them!

because i liked the idea of powder foundation so much but found it not to be exactly the skin tone to match my skin, i once perused through target and found covergirl’s trublend powder foundation and it worked just as well if not better for me! at only $8 a pop and with a good kabuki brush, it works just as well!

i really don’t know the difference between quality level of covergirl and bare escentuals but i haven’t had any problems yet.

if $25 is too much for you to spend on foundation, try covergirl’s powder foundation!

I use Bare Minerals when I feel like wearing makeup and I LOVE it. However, I’ve found that I don’t photograph well with it on. Even when I use very little, my face comes out umm..a little too luminous in pictures. I haven’t seen this happen with other people I know who use it, and my face doesn’t look so shiny and light when I don’t use the makeup. :-( I still love it for daily wear, but I’m quite certain I wont be using it on my wedding day.

my sister turned me on to the bare minerals make up and the first time i tried it, i felt like i had to put more on, only b/c it felt like i had no make up on! but believe me, a little goes a long way…it’s great stuff! it takes me a little longer than my old make up (foundation stick and go), but it’s worth the time.

i hate to wear foundation/powders cuz i don’t like the make up look and it usually feels icky later in the day.

but! if i am in a situation where i should wear make up, i typically wear bare minerals. it’s very nice! and i barely notice it.

i use bare minerals… overall i like the feel, but i do feel like it’s messy and not the most convenient product, and i feel like it’s hard to figure out how much to use each time.

but, i like it significantly better than any foundation stick or liquid, and i never break out. it’s hit or miss - sometimes it looks like the coverage is smooth and good, but other times it doesn’t look like anything is on, and doesn’t hide my flaws… but perhaps it’s because i still have to figure out how to use it.

part of me thinks it’s because i need to get a better brush than the one it comes with in the starter kit.

I’ve only tried the physicians formula mineral makeup and it made my skin itch :( I was so upset with it, and it’s supposed to even be lacking in some of the things that regularly cause a reaction! I’ve been meaning to order some from aromaleigh though…perhaps it’s time to try that.

love love LOVE this stuff and have been using B.E. for over 3 years. I’ve gotten my family and friends hooked on B.E. too! It’s important to make sure your face is well-moisturized (but not greasy) before applying and it really blends into your skin. I use Smashbox Photo Finish before buffing it on.

I’ve also started using their concealers (Bisque, Summer Bisque) under my eyes and am very impressed with the staying power and how natural-looking it is (unlike many cakey under-eye concealers).

In my search for wedding makeup, I also tried BE. Unfortunately, it irritated my skin. (It seems like everything does when it stays on for more than a few hours.. grrrrr)

Even if my skin was not so sensitive, I would not have used BE for my wedding makeup. I took some photos of myself using flash, and BE did not photograph well. It was too “glowy” in an eerie way. I think the minerals reflect light.

So be sure to test out BE using flash photography! Good luck.

haha…im the best friend and it really does make a big difference for me…i have a lot of scars from previous breakouts (the awkward years) and redness on my cheeks and under my nose…the powder covers it up flawlessly…

i find that taking pictures is tricky….regular cameras make me look great but studio pics really do make you look shiny…so i just don’t use the last step (sheer cover)

*tip* for it to not look cakey you need to exfoliate…it’s a must and i find that powder applies much easier.

I use bare minerals too! I don’t wear make-up too often, so I don’t really know much about it (well, foundation at least). And I’ve always had a hard time finding the right texture and color for myself. Bare minerals ended up being perfect for me.

I am in the market for a new foundation and was going to buy Prescriptives Virtual Skin Foundation because of the rave reviews here but am very interested in the mineral makeup because I can break out. I wasn’t sure it’d cover up my brown spots (I get it from the sun. Kinda like Lucy Liu’s but not so pretty :) SAZZ said it covers flawlessly. Does it really cover everything-even brown spots?? Thanks!
