Reader Buzz: Movie Compatibility

October 19th, 2006 @ 2:15 pm by Reader Buzz

This is Mr. Bee.

It’s true, it’s true… I did enjoy watching The Notebook with Mrs. Bee. However I would never admit this in a public forum. And now that I’ve been outed, I can never meet any of you… it would just be too embarrassing!

I’ve noticed that couples often have similar tastes in movies. It doesn’t have to be a 100% match - I like watching action movies, whereas Mrs. Bee is a bit plus/minus on them. But it’s important to have a few genres that you can enjoy together. For us, it tends to be romantic comedies, documentaries, and foreign films. These shared genres make up for the fact that I am too squeamish to ever watch a horror movie with Mrs. Bee. blush3.gif

Are you and your S.O. movie compatible?

My hubby and I usually can watch romantic comedys together as well as Disney/Pixar based movies together We both like crime/dramas as well but at times I get lost in the story and am too squeamish at times for all the blood but overall we have similar tastes. We both love the Law and Order dramas together as well

Not really. We have two separate list on Netflix.

You know, we are movie opposites, minus the romantic comedies or the just pure comedies. He loves action (faves: Terminator 2 and Starship Troopers) and being a coach, ALL sports movies. I’m a fan of novels made into movies, and we both like horror. All in all, he watches his things, and I watch mine. Sometimes we watch together, sometimes apart. One thing I love doing is watching him play video games, that’s so much fun for me!

We have some crossover…we both like artsy indie movies. He likes comic book influenced movies, though, and I don’t really, and I like a lot of documentary and biopic movies. He’ll watch them, and enjoy them, but he wouldn’t ever pick one out.

On our first date ever we rented Shaun of the Dead. That’s probably when I knew we’d get along ;)

My SO and I for the most part enjoy the same type of movies/tv shows. He got me hooked on to all things HBO and Showtime and he has reluctantly watched romantic comedies with me and admitted to liking them. (But he never fails to say, DON’T TELL ANYONE I LIKED IT) The only times we disagree is when he turns on those Court TV police chase shows and more recently, the new series Dexter which I find too graphic for me!

We’re very much have the same taste in films, except he likes horror movies and I don’t dare watch!!!

I don’t like stupid comedy and he doesn’t like romantic comedy, but we both watch both. We both like action, he likes scary story lines, I like sweet ones. We trade off when renting. “This weekend, it’s your turn, next it’s mine!” or my favorite, “I’ll watch that [super scary and probably really gory] movie with you if you watch this [completely romantic, sappy, grab the tissues] movie with me!”

Works [almost] every time!

We are not compatible at all! Except, we do like watching arthouse movies together.. And a few other really good dramas..

Jennifer says:

Oh, I forgot, we have exactly the same tastes in tv shows!

Grey’s Anatomy, CSI Miami, The Bachelor (although he’d never admit that one!), Amazing Race, Big Brother, and Survivor, just to name a few of our obsessions!

we do like the same movies and makes it easy when it comes to our dvd collection :)

it’s kind of weird, but i think we’re the only couple that didn’t like the notebook. we caught the last 2/3 of it on tv and just didn’t enjoy it. maybe we should have watched from the start? hmmm

Dont feel too bad! My “Mr. Tuff Guy” Husband cried like a baby when he saw that movie.
(he was still crying when it was over)LOL! Now when we go get a movie and pass by it I’ll ask “how about this one?” He responds “HELL NO!!!!!!!!^_^

I also wanted to add that I made my FI come to the theater to see it with me, because I had read the book years before. He put up quite a fight, but I finagled a “Bourne’s Identity” movie in there and he gave in . :) He was right in the end, there was only one other non-female person there. Whoops.

We are pretty opposite, he loves scary movies, and i get too scared (maybe that’s why he loves them, ha ha). He loves sports stuff, I’d rather watch foreign or independent movies. BTW, my fi made me watch the notebook with HIM, I wouldn’t have watched something like that on my own.

I think the great part about not being totally compatible is that we both watch good movies we wouldn’t otherwise have watched.

I like romantic comedies and just plain old chick flicks, he LOVES Alien and anything else Ridley Scott and/or horror, which I can’t take. Thankfully, we both love straight comedies, drama, war films, Asian films, and superhero movies. :)

we’re pretty compatible so that helps. especially since i love action movies [the more explosions and fast cars, the better]. the only thing we don’t see eye to eye on are horror films. they tend to be too graphic for me. i told him i’d help find him a movie buddy so he can still watch those with someone. just not me.

yeah but only when jet li, after saving his village from anarchy, falls in love with a cancer ridden young woman who can’t bear to love…wait that hasn’t happened. Actually, it’s a hit or miss with us. I really like teeny bob movies(don’t judge…I watched “just my luck” with LL) and he likes ANY martial arts film(including stephen segal…go fig) We do compromise on disney…we love the kiddie flicks.

Jenn says:

i’d like to think we are, he was my movie buddy before we started dating =-)
