Unusual Diamond Shapes

October 20th, 2006 @ 3:21 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

People who take a look at my engagement ring typically give it a first glance, then do a double-take and ask, “What shape is that??”

The reason for their puzzlement is that mine is not a normal shape; in fact, many people have never heard of it before. It’s called a Galia, and is a trademarked shape cut only by Derco Diamonds (more on them to come; wonderful vendor!). At first glance, it appears to be a square princess cut, but upon further inspection, one will notice that the top facet is an octagon, like that of a round diamond. Galia is a brilliant faceted shape, a cross between a round and a princess, with the end outline having beveled corners, like an Asscher. They all are certified with Excellent symmetry and polish and have laser-inscribed serial numbers on one edge for easy ID.

I fell in love with the shape during a trip with my fiance to Derco in the SF Gift Center, where we custom-designed the setting together. While trying on settings with the loose stone, the stone kept falling into the prongs and turning 45 degrees, with its points between the prongs. Looking at it that way changed the effect entirely, and I loved it, so we had it set that way in my final ring for a (literal) twist.

Shooting the above a few nights ago, I tried to catch the light on the top facet to make the difference of the shape easy to see in the photos. Somehow, my hands always look “old woman” in pictures. I guess I’m just not used to seeing all those individual little lines. Oh well.

Who else has a unique shape to share about?

I’ve always been the simple/classy type of girl, in terms of fashion and tastes. One would think then I would’ve gone with a solitare round diamond. It’s a beautiful ring, but it just wasn’t “me.” Then I learned of the emerald cut diamon and I fell in love with it! But my fiance and my mom worried that it might not be “sparkly” enough and kinda trendy, and that I might not like it as much as the years went by. We went to look at rings down in Jeweler’s Row in Philly and I saw the radiant cut diamond, which is like a hybrid between an emerald cut and round cut. It’s smooth on top and rectangular, with the sparkliness inside! We added it to an antiquey setting of milgrain edging and pave diamonds encrusting the “x” portion of the ring. It’s unique because I haven’t seen any girls in my life with this diamond and I haven’t seen any online pictures that looked remotely like my ring. I love it that it’s different and it’s all mine! :)

beautiful ring and diamond! :)

me is a round solitare, but its a “hearts and arrows” cut. the cuts form hearts, when looked at it through a little microscope thingy. ok, ive only seen it twice, because really, im not carrying around a microscope. LOL. but its pretty cool, and it makes it extra sparkly!

jessi, i have a H&A too! (acutally an “a cut above” h&a) i wasn’t going to respond, cause i didn’t think it was fancy enough, but i guess, really, it is - it’s not your traditional round!

I have a radiant, too! I was going for an emerald, so we looked at Robbins Bros., and the ones we saw were dead looking. THEN I tried on a rectangular radiant (there are square and rectangular) and loved it- the cut corners and the long shape I had wanted in the emerald. So we went looking online and bought it from whiteflash.

I know round is a classic but I didn’t like the way it spakled. so i had to be original, i have a modified square cusion which looks very similar to yours but it’s basically a princess and round. Its a rounded princess…but it sparkles like a radiant…it shimmers. i love my ring everytime i look at it!

I like cushion cut diamonds-they were very popular in the late 1800’s so you’ll find them often in estate sales. They’ve regained popularity in the recent years because movie stars wear them. A cushion cut looks like a mix between a princess and an oval.

I have a Lucida diamond from Tiffany’s. It’s a square mixed cut in a four prong setting, and is similar to the Asscher and antique cushion cuts.

Mine isn’t actually a unique cut, but it looks like it is because of the setting. It was my grandmother’s from 1946 before they had invented most fancy cuts, including anything square, so they would take a round brilliant and set it in a squared off setting. It’s so fun because it has the sparkle of the brilliant, but the edge of a princess. I’ve had multiple people do a double take because it’s so different!

I have a Marquis set sideways. I love it, and everyone who sees it says that they didn’t think they liked marquise, but set the way it is, it’s gorgeous.

that is GORGEOUS! I don’t have mine yet, hehe, but the one he’s getting is a princess cut, waterfall design, I believe it’s called. the diamonds on the band go under the larger center stone :) I haven’t seen any other ring that has the band diamonds go underneath. not as unique as yours, but very pretty. :)

My stone isn’t a unique shape, it’s just a round. However, the diamonds on either side are unique. There are 8 princess cut diamonds on each side and they are set 2×4 with the diamonds holding themselves in the setting, not individually set. According to the FI there are very few companies that make rings this way and i’ve only ever seen one other one like it.

there is a photo on my site …

..i just started the site so it needs lots of work, but i’m a creative person, i should have it gorgeous in no time.

I love how everyone’s ring ends up being the perfect one for them, and how many unique ideas there are out there. The ring might not be the most obvious thing to get creative with, but you certainly can be!

And Miss Poppy — I’m sure your princess cut is beautiful as well!

Maria — thanks for letting me know… I’m so happy for you!

i have a round center stone, too, but my channel-set stones are unique. they are square step cut, which are very hard to source right now because they aren’t popular. it’s pretty much between asscher and emerald, or a baguette made square. it’s square like a princess, but step cut for that clean emerald look. i love how clean and crisp they are. they let the round center stone be brilliant and sparkly, complementing it just enough while not being SO sparkly as to compete.
