Cake Decorating

October 24th, 2006 @ 4:30 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

For all my dental talk lately, I seriously must have one of the biggest sweet tooths (teeth?) in the whole world. And, appropriately enough, I also love to bake.

Recently, inspired by a trip to my local Michael’s (and from looking at so many wedding cakes!), I decided to try my hand at cake decorating. I’m artsy, but completely new to the realm of edible art, so I signed up enthusiastically for one of those Wilton classes offered at many Michael’s stores.

I was at first very surprised at the “deals” on classes Michael’s offers, ie. bring a friend and one of you is free, or buy the (necessary) kit for the class and you’re free. Then I caught on that the reason for this seemingly generous discount is because every person in the class ends up spending lots of $$ at Michael’s trying to stock up on decorating supplies. I must say that I caved, too, though I only purchased the basics and denied myself such luxuries as a Wilton cake-decorating tackle box, made especially to lug all of my materials to and from classes. Halfway through the length of the first course, I discovered that WalMart also carries Wilton stuff - a more limited supply, but a bit cheaper.

Anyway, all this to say that I am having a blast learning to decorate, and I have all sorts of ideas for my wedding cake! Taking classes has really helped me to understand the process of forming a thoughtfully planned out, artistically decorated cake. Before you ask: no, I am not exactly making my own cake, per se… but I do have some big ideas for it that I am super excited about! Sorry to be all secretive at the moment, but I still need a little bit of time to map the whole thing out in my head before I post about it. I promise I will soon! Until then, here’s a picture of a birthday cake I made, using techniques learned in the first course. Please ignore the ring of oil from the shortening in the frosting. Haha.

wow that looks great! I’ve always wondered about their classes…can’t wait to try it! I may even attempt my own rehearsal dinner cake (my ultimate dream is to create something like that fabulous Super Mario Bro. cake featured here a while back)

that looks fantastic!

your post reminded me — when i was in high school, the “master class” in home ec was the gourmet cooking class. it was only offered when there was enough interest, and i was lucky enough to have enough classmates who were interested (including a member of the football team). we did an entire section on cakes and cake decorating — we made the cakes, made the frosting, and received grades on our frosting roses, leaves and writing.

and for our final test of the section — make, bake and decorate a wedding cake! it had to be three tiers, and we could do whatever theme or color we wanted. they were tiny (the base was a 8″, with 6″ and 4″ tiers) and adorable!

i remember the top student made her cake pink and blue with tons of flowers, and she even made a little topper!

Thanks, all! Everyone should try it… it’s relaxing AND rewarding. And Audrey: I so agree with you about that Super Mario Bros. cake!

Tea — not after only one class… I made that cake after the third class, I think. I used only techniques from the first course (Level 1), which is four classes total.

Many of the other ladies had beautiful results in class too — give it a try!

That’s awesome! I sooo want to join too but Michael’s is too far away. (I’m in brooklyn, ny). I did purchase a Wilton cake decorating kit at Party City for only $10. I’ve only tried decorating cupcakes with it, but it got me all excited just using it. :o)

It looks too good to eat. I bet you have to look away when the cake’s being cut!
