About Reader Email

I just wanted to share this in case it might be helpful to others. It was inspired by weddingbee.

My mom, aunts, and some of my good friends live far away. I was trying to think of a way to incorporate their input into the wedding without driving me crazy (specifically my mom and aunts). I got a list of the aunts and friends I know who are very interested in my wedding. I wrote them a very nice e-mail asking that they be part of the “wedding research club.” Every week, I send them out either an update or a question that I ask their opinion on. Like, what color envelopes I should use, what photo I should use, which is their favorite centerpiece. I always have some idea about what I want, but I like to hear their opinions (even if I don’t always agree).

The response has been wonderful. One aunt prints out the options and takes them to my grandmother and gets her opinion. Another aunt has started “collecting funds” from family members for the wedding. I get a check for about $100 every month. My girlfriends who live near by have offered to help put together invites and build centerpieces. Almost everyone has offered some great suggestions. It’s like having a mini “weddingbee” listserve specifically for my wedding. It has also been helpful in keeping people excited about the wedding and feeling like they have a part in it.

I should say, I never ask open ended questions. I always list about three options and see which one they like better. I’m a little controlling and I feel this helps me give them an idea of what I want but still have their input.Bethany

That’s so sweet that you are including them in the planning process, I’m sure they love helping! I wish my friends/family were more interested in the wedding - cuz I think that is a great idea!

if only those in my world with opinions would let that limit their input! I’m glad it’s working for you.
