Open Question: Monogram Flowers

RE: Mrs. Ladybug’s Initial Flowers

Open Question: Monogram Flowers : wedding advice diy flowers monogram Z29096267 125_2581

Armed with 50% off coupons, I hit up Michaels yesterday for styrofoam. I glanced at the silk flower prices and realized this is going to be an expensive project! Still determined, I figured I’ll just use 50% and 40% off coupons for everything and do it slowly over the next year. However, today it hit me. I’m going to be putting the letters over the driveway entrance or my venue, 15 feet up in the air, attached to the archway. People will be driving through and seeing our initials from a distance - they won’t be eye level for inspection purposes. What do you think of using a combination of tissue paper and silk flowers, or even just tissue paper? Has anyone tried this and would it look okay?

Thanks,
Kris a.k.a. skichik

I think that tissue paper will be beautiful! It actually looks softer and more artistic. Plus, back when I worked at Pier 1 we had gift boxes covered with fake dasies and they were constantly falling off (the buds are pretty heavy for glue). I think tissue paper is a super-cheap and super-chic alterntive!

Skichik: Love the tissue paper idea!! Also, to help save cost, Hobby Lobby has 40% coupons that Michael’s will honor (you can print one out on HB’s website).

Also, saw your comment below to Miss Strawberry’s post re: The Ruins. What did you find about those vases?

Sorry that this is not the right venue to discuss this. :( I didn’t know how to get in touch with you otherwise.

My only concern is if it rained. The tissue paper would get soggy and maybe start shredding. Will the monogram be covered from the elements?

I think it’ll be fine…rain might be a concern, but you’re not talking about total tissue, right? I thought you were talking about half/half and/or filling space with tissue? that’s what I would do over entirely tissue…

I want to know where everyone’s finding these script styrofoam letters for monogram wreaths???

I’m famous! I’m on weddingbee! LOL

My mom did bring up the rain to me…so Now I’m not sure about the tissue paper. But, I’m thinking of using maybe some little plastic squares form the cheap leis or trash bags?! I’m not sure how it will look, I’ll definitely have to experiment.

As for where I found the script…I went through all fo the fonts on MS word with our initials to see what I liked best. I also checked out fonts from dafont.com and 1001 free fonts.

If you want to talk about the vases, you can find me on the knot under skichik (in the talk forums)

Tissue paper is a great idea I think, even it people would see them upclose. You could use a “pomping” technique: wrapping small sqaures of tissue paper around a pencil or stick and poking them into the styrofoam. Another idea would be to use fabric squares. When I was younger I’d make wreaths by cutting up fabric into squares, wrapping each around a pen and poking them into these straw-like wreath forms you could buy at the craft store. Maybe the fabric would hold up a little better if it rained too! Good luck!

For my monograms, I took apart the individual blooms on a few stems of hydrangeas. Since a hydrangea is so full, I only needed 9 stems or so. I don’t know how much Michael’s cost, but I bought the flowers from http://www.save-on-crafts.com and they were about $2/stem. Here’s how I made them: http://bigfatchinesewedding.blogspot.com/2006/05/floral-monograms.html. I can send pics of how it looked on the day of too (haven’t had a chance to blog about it yet), if anyone is interested.

Tissue paper works very well & it looks great. You can check out knottie BRIDESTARR’s bio for directions & pics of her tissue covered initial wreaths.
