An Alternative To Flowers

October 27th, 2006 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Peach

I will be getting married in a pretty big church. Not only is it big, the style is modern with a lot of open space. I would have liked to get married in a church that had a cozier, more traditional atmosphere, but I am thankful nevertheless that ours is super nice and new. But now, I am starting to get worried about how I’m going to decorate this place.

In most traditional style churches, even if the church is really big, the ornate architectural design is usually enough so that ribbon and flowers are sufficient for decorations. The sanctuary of my church, however, is modern and has wide-open empty space that is very simple in design. In addition, the picture you see below is only about half of the sanctuary; the angle was too wide to capture the entire place. We do expect a lot of people at the wedding, but probably not enough to fill the entire church.

So I’ve sort of ruled out flowers as my main decorative piece in the ceremony. Why you ask? First of all, I am not a big flower person. Second of all, even if I were, I couldn’t afford to decorate the entire place with enough flowers to make it appear full. As an alternative, I’ve been thinking candles! Below are some pictures of ceremonies that have incorporated candlelight. Not only are candles romantic, I feel that candles give off a glow that will warm the room and perhaps make it seem cozier.

What do you think? Have you considered alternatives to flowers for your wedding dÆ’©cor?

I think we’re going to have a large flower arangements up front, but I’m going to have A LOT of candles of differening sizes on the alter. I think I’m also going to do mongram letters on the pews, either H for my new last name or B and G for the bride’s side or groom’s side.

i like the candles at the alter… but candles near the aisle scare me… one they can get tipped over by your wedding party while walking down the aisle… or they can get tipped over by guest…

My church has 14 candelabra that they include with the rental of the church. The only thing is… do you think that the candelabra will look bare without a flower arrangement on it? Like the pics you posted?

I’m still not sure what we’re doing for the ceremony, but I don’t want a big flowery mass, so I’m thinking potted trees, or topiaries. For the centerpieces we’re doing glass cylinders with pillar candles and candy corn.

here’s another clean modern inspiration! (the branches are the same color as the wood used for the pews in your church!):

Our church rental comes with LOTS of candles (2 huge candelabras for the altar and enough to line all the way down the aisle like the pics you posted). They come with hurricane glasses around them and they attach to the pews, so you dont have to worry about them toppling over. We’re also doing the sticks similar to what Krizia posted! We’re kind of having a branchy theme, though, so it seems perfect. I have a couple pics in my knottie bio if you wanna see…

My church is similar to yours but I didnt get married at it for that reason I used candles to line the pews as well and it gave a beautiful romantic feel =)

The priest asked us to make our decorations more subtle since we will be getting married during Advent. So I’m doing organza pew bows, wreaths on the outside of the doors, which I’ll probably donate to the church, and whatever candles are already in the front of the church. At 2pm, I’m not so worried about using many candles. The church has large stained glass windows which will enhance the mood.

For my wedding I was also in a more modern church building so around the steps leading up to the stage (much like the picture you posted) we ran white Christmas lights with champagne colored tuille and burgundy ribbon wrapped around them. I loved the effect and it showed up nicely in the pictures.

I am also using a lot of tulle and fairy lights..it might be safer than candles that might drip wax or worse fall down
