Cookbooks

October 30th, 2006 @ 7:31 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

I was just reading our new Reader’s Digest in…well…the place where everyone reads Reader’s Digest (c’mon, it can’t just be a coincidence how neatly it fits on the back of the toilet!) and stumbled across this little gem:

(in an article on The Joy of Cooking):
“Recipe testers used 485 pounds of red meat and 3,000 eggs to guarantee that each recipe was worthy of inclusion.”

Don’t they make it sound like each recipe calls for 485 lb of red meat and 3,000 eggs? hehehe :)

Anyway, it did get me thinking about cookbooks in general. Last Christmas I received this:

cookbook.jpg

Even though we’re not married yet, I use it all the time–it’s a great cookbook, and would make an excellent shower gift. :) It contains not only recipes, but general tips on cooking and entertaining…even things like “semi-homemade” recipes, throwing a party on a budget, theme dinners, etc.

But at the same time it makes me a little bit sad, because I think cookbooks may be headed on their way out…there are so many great recipe sites on the Internet now that oftentimes it’s just easier to look for things that way rather than thumbing through the pages of a book.

Do you still use a cookbook? Which one(s) is/are your favorite?

my mom gave me her betty crocker cookbook [i forget which one...but it's kinda like a binder] before i left for college and will be sitting down with me to pass on all of her korean recipes too.

we don’t really buy cookbooks but make our own [with binders] from magazine articles and the internet and from other people’s recipes as well.

I still use my Joy of Cooking occasionally, like if I need to reference how long to cook a cut of meat I don’t usually cook. Joy is the best, it has freakin’ everything, and it always turns out well. Some cookbooks (like the ones with pretty pictures) I don’t think they actually make the recipes before they write them down.
I hijack Cook magazine from my parents’ house too, it’s got good recipes and kitchen suggestions.

My mom made a binder with my favorite family recipes. I use that all the time and it is really treasured! The published book that I use the most is Better Homes & Gardens (the red & white classic).

I love cookbooks. My friends always give me cookbooks for gifts because they know how much I love them. My favourites (that I own) are The AWW New Curries and Vegie Food. I love cook books, but I also love just taking ideas from them and mixing them together, which is why the internet is also so great.

Hands down, my favourite cookbook is a Starlight cookbook from the 1920’s that my grandmother gave me. Its pages are filled with old-fashioned recipes, and the margins of those pages, as well as the interior of the cover and blank pages, are filled with my grandmother’s recipes, mother’s recipes, and a handwritten note that my great-grandmother put on the interior front cover congratulating my grandmother on her recent marriage.

I break down in tears when I see it.

I love love love “How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food” by Mark Bittman. The writing in it is so good, sometimes I just read it for fun! Seriously, though, it really teaches you about how to cook and how to make something in a basic way and then how to get creative and alter it. I highly recommend it (mostly for cooking newbies like me!)

I HIGHLY recommend The New Best Recipe by Cooks’ Illustrated. I bought it last year to give a friend for her wedding and loved it so much I bought it for myself. My fiance has said many times that he didn’t think anyone make better lasagna than his Italian mom until he had mine, which is out of that cook book. The recipes aren’t very difficult and the food tastes amazing!!

I also love the New Best Recipe…also Cook’s Illustrated magazine is excellent and filled with not only recipes but also a consumer reports style review of everything from cuts of meat to the best recipe for mac and cheese. I’m hoping I get another year’s subscription for a shower gift.

I’m a firm believer that everyone MUST own a copy of the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook (the red-checked one!) It’s the same kind of good-all-around book with helpful tips in it, as well as recipes. I also have a couple of martha stewart cookbooks, one from jamie oliver, several on specialty cooking (crock pot, vegetarian, bread machine, desserts), and a few for cuisine from around the world. Then there are the local church cookbooks that originally were made for fund raisers and have some of the best recipes from the ‘little old ladies’ in the community that you could ever find.

I also collect old (vintage?) cookbooks. Anything funky looking that generally calls for full-fat everything and lots of eggs to be used. They’re awesome!

My kitchen cabinets have a space above them, so I stack all the books on their sides so that they’re within easy reach when I need them, but look decorative when I don’t.

My favorite stand-by is The Joy of Cooking. I also collect old home-ec books from the 50’s and they have really amazingly simple, classic recipes!

I also love cookbooks. I got my first cookbook-Better Homes & Gardens cookbook-when I was 13 years old. Strangely enough, it was from a school friend (what jr high school girlfriend gives cookbooks as a birthday present??) But I loved it so much. I still remember how happy I was to get it.

nigella lawson’s how to eat.

its not the best cookbook in the world, but i enjoyed reading it like an actual book instead of a cookbook; she has a great attitude about food.

We use our Betty Crocker cookbook all the time! It has the best cookie recipes!

We’ve also made two mustard chicken, silver cake, and a bunch of other random things. It’s helpful because it show pictures of cuts of beef and how long and what temperature you should use when cooking them.

i gave my copy of “the best recipe” by cook’s illustrated to fi; he LOVES that cookbook and it’s the only one he can understand. he always knows what to cook for me because my favorite recipes are on stained and splattered pages, my very own bookmarks!

I received the same cookbook (Betty Crocker: Bridal Edition) when I got married. It’s great! I like to look up recipes on-line, too. Betty Crocker on-line has different recipes than the ones in her cookbook.

As much as I use the internet, I LOVE cookbooks. Everyone should get the new Gourmet cookbook - it makes looking like a total pro easy — everything out of that book has been amazing. Also, I think that Mark Bittman is a wonderful food writer, and he really does a good job of explaining how and why to do certain things in the kitchen.

I like looking up recipes online, but I actually prefer cooking out of magazines, which sounds strange. I love Everyday Food by MS, and the recipes that pop up in Real Simple.

I also got this cookbook, but honestly hadn’t looked at it much! I got about 10 cookbooks at a shower, and just haven’t had time to read through them all. This one sounds great though! I do use the red-checked one quite often, it really helps with the basic techniques.
