Decor

October 30th, 2006 @ 1:46 pm by Mrs. Violet

There’s something about the vintage look that inspires me. Between Mr. Violet and I, we have very different ideas of what a home should look like. He’s more into the monochromatic look and clean lines. He favors neutral colors, stainless steel and hardwood floors. I, on the other hand, would love to cover my home with elements of vintage. I want my home to excude coziness and warmth.

Anthropologie is one of my favorite stores.

Urban Outfitters - another favorite.

I’m also in love with Vintage Pyrex.

Love how this is displayed.

As much as I love coffee, I enjoy tea as well. My favorite teas are Jasmine, Darjeeling & English Breakfast.

Handmade Hearts

And bags

A place for all that mail and such.

I guess when it comes time to decorate our new home, I’ll just have to find a way to add in my vintage elements without cramping Mr. Violet’s style. Do you and your mate have issues when it comes decorating your home?

OMG. Mr.Strawberry and I were talking about this exact thing this weekend. I’m sooooo vintage and shabby chic and he’s more moderen and clean lines! We’ve been debating about bedding forever!!!

We talk about it, but he usually lets me have my way. He likes what he likes, but he doesn’t have a specific design preference. Luckily, I’m not hugely into girly stuff, but I like vintage. And I also collect vintage Pyrex! I love it. The colors are wonderful to display, and I love that it’s functional, too. I was shocked last Christmas when he gave me the George Nelson ball clock–I think I had mentioned just once to him that I had always wanted it. He’s the best.

“Do you and your mate have issues when it comes decorating your home?”

Yeah! I was just wondering that right when I first read your post. How do you work these things out? My bf (we’re not engaged, but if we were to get married) and I are actually the opposite. I like the modern look in interior designs and furnishings and he’s more into the…I don’t know what the word is, but he likes the sturdy dark redwood furniture (is that considered vintage too but in a non-girly way?). Miss Violet, you should let us know how your house ends up looking. =)

L - I will definitely report to weddingbee once we have a place.. it isn’t happening until next june. i can’t wait! i think for most part we’re okay with the big ticket items, it’s just about those little accents and wall color that may be an issue.. we’ll see!

red, dark wood furniture reminds me of an English library.. dark and heavy.. in that case, tell him he can decorate his office however he wants.. haha.

Miss Apple

We went antiquing this weekend. Huge sidewalk sale in Downtown Dallas and I fell in love with all of their vintage pieces and so did my FI! We went to a dozen or so stores and shopped around checking out antiques and bought some adorable decorative lamps, paintings, and a coffee table for dirt cheap! There is a level of quality and service that you get with vintage/antique stores rather than those big brand name furniture stores. If you want great finds and beautiful vintage pieces, you must go check them out! I feel a post coming on….-)

Maybe you can designate certain rooms to be vintage and others more modern. Our downstairs is very modern with painted steel blue walls & lots of neutrals (beige/brown) and our second floor will be decorated French Country (my all time fav)!

Good Luck!

OMG! I’m into the modern/clean/simple look while my bf is into the English library/traditional look. Crazy!!

I’m art deco and he’s anime and comic book. At least we pretty much agree that we like bright bold colors and clean lines.

miss apple - i totally agree with you on the antiquing.. whenever we go upstate to maine or new hampshire, i’m always rummaging through the antique shops.. just never had a reason to buy anything.. but soon, i will!

luckily, my bf and I don’t have that issue. We have similiar taste, mostly modern and bold. He painted my room (in his house) orange for god’s shake. I think we try not to clash with it each other. We exhibit individuality when it comes to personal space.
I like the bags!!!

surprisingly, we both have similar tastes when it comes to decorating - masculine new england style w/ a slight contemporary edge. i used to be into frou frou shabby chic, laura ashley stuff but i grew out of it. but i still do like some french country stuff like Tissage Moutet’s tablecloths.

FI and I are the same–he likes modern, clean, monochromatic and I love hodge podge. We’ll find a middle ground, it just may not be pretty… :O)

I hate it when I think of comething to add…pretty much I think we’ll have to take a room by room approach. Modern in the bedroom, vintage in the living room, etc. We’ll see!

No problems yet because everything we have we’ve been given. Our apartment looks decent for being assembled entirely out of hand-me-downs.

You & I have the same style. I love the vintage look, and Anthropologie is definitely the place to get all of these items. If you’re ever in Philly, definitely check the Anthro there (4 floors of pure heaven!). Even if you get little things like curtains and mail holders, you can plan your whole floor plan around those colors and still get that warm cozy, homey feel. :)
