Where (In The Grander Sense)?

October 30th, 2006 @ 2:45 pm by Mrs. Bluebell

Because I always knew I would be getting married at my family’s summer house where generations of us have been married before, I got to skip the whole “where to get married” question. But now that I’m talking to more brides and reading more wedding sites, I’m seeing that the “where” is actually the first real big hurdle for most brides! Not only do you have to choose a venue, but most couples are having to start off picking a country, then a state (if it’s in the US), then a specific area, before they can even start thinking about venues. With so many international couples these days, plus people moving across country for college or jobs, it seems that the average couple has a wide variety of potential wedding locations.

How did you decide where you are going to get married? What weighed heaviest on your mind in that decision?

Traditionally, the hometown of the bride was the default location, but now perhaps her parents have moved, or all her friends are in her college town, or she wants to have it where she lives now, or perhaps the groom feels more strongly about a given location, or they ditch all of that and choose to have a destination wedding!

Where is your wedding going to be?

We chose the city in which we met. :)

I originally wanted it to be in our current town (2.5 hrs from my hometown, 45 min from where his family lives), but then I started checking out venue costs. I realized that we could do the exact same wedding in my more rural hometown for about 1/3 of the cost, and we’d have more people pitching in to help since my family would be there!

We chose my home state, but not my home town. My fiance’s family has more money than mine and since one side or the other was going to need to travel, we decided it was less of a burden on his family than mine. However, since they are traveling a great distance (from across the country in many cases), we were asked to choose a “destination” type area. We chose a resort town in NH on a lake. It’s about an hour and fifteen minute drive for my family, but most of them have been up there before and the trip is far easier than if we were getting married in my fiance’s home town in Pennsylvania.

Hopefully we made the right choice!

Well, we chose ours because it’s the city I grew up in, but it’s also the city my parents live in, and just down the street from our apartment. The real reason we chose it? The package included a Hansen’s cake, and their cakes are the best. SOLD!

my parents have lived in the same town for over 30 years, and they have been waiting just as long for one of the kids to get married. no way could we (or would we be allowed to!) get married anywhere else.
luckily, we love our venue!

I chose where we both currently live, but it’s also my FI’s hometown. Either way a portion of the guests would have to travel, so we chose to have the smaller contingent travel. Also, it would be easier to travel here since it is near major highways and airports, while my family is not.

We chose our location because it is where we always vacation and it is a place we fell in love with while we were falling in love with each other.
We knew we didn’t want to get married in either of our home towns and we knew we wanted something “different”
We got what we wanted!
I’ll let you all know how it worked out in exactly 33 days and counting!

we decided on a destination location because our parents go to different churches and we knew there would be conflict (between our parents) over which church to have the wedding. and we also chose it because it was also where he proposed. :)

We knew we wanted a destination wedding after getting engaged in Maui. We loved Hawaii but decided it was too far and so spent a lot of time researching the different Caribbean islands. A travel agent suggested the U.S. Virgin Islands and we decided St. Thomas was the perfect spot for the wedding, with St. John and the BVI conveniently nearby for our honeymoon!

My hometown, Chicago. Initially we picked it because we thought it would be less expensive that NYC, where we live now. Except, I haven’t lived in Chicago for 10 years and guess what - it’s no bargain any more! At least it’s easy for everyone to get to….

I’m lucky: the town where we met, my home town, and the town our college is in is the same place! My home church is beautiful and my FH suggested it first, so I didn’t feel bad about wanting to get married there!
