My Dress-Buying Journey

October 31st, 2006 @ 11:31 am by Mrs. Lime

I “visited” my dress this weekend, so it inspired me to post about it. I have no closet space at my place to store the thing, so it’s currently hanging at my mom’s. Mr. Lime and I housesat for her this weekend, so he saw it too, (albeit still wrapped up in plastic. I know, I know, I shouldn’t keep it in plastic). Since he’s seen it, I might as well share with the world.

I don’t know how, but at some point early in the wedding planning process I suddently became obsessed with finding a dress. This is one thing I originally thought I’d cut back on as I tend to like clean, unfussy, modern stuff for formal dresses (heck, for everything). I came across Ulla Maija’s website, and found THE dress…at least from the pretty published pictures. It had everything I wanted - clean and sculptural, nice draping, nice back, simple (without too much beading or lace) but not too plain, a unique neckline, and an interesting train (it’s detachable, but the dress itself has a tiny sweep train, too!).

I went to two different Saks stores to try it on, and I loved it both times. However, some of the other dresses I tried on were more flattering. Some of them were about one-twentieth of the price. No matter how flattering they were, there was always something I didn’t like about them. I didn’t cry or have that “wow, this is THE one” moment that many of you have described. Both times I tried it on, I was alone. I couldn’t get it off my mind, though.

I started scouring ebay and preownedweddingdresses.com. I found one that was the perfect size, but the auction had just ended with no buyers. When I contacted the seller, she said she would be posting it on preownedweddingdresses.com shortly. I just couldn’t pass the opportunity up, so I bought it. I had a great experience with the seller, and the transaction was very smooth. It had been dry-cleaned, it is in great condition, AND I got it at a fraction of the retail cost.

The dress fits pretty well. I will need to take the bust and hem in a bit, but I’ve got plenty of time to worry about that. All of these pictures are with the detachable train attached, but the back of the skirt is pretty cool without the train as well. Please excuse the wrinkly-ness and the crappy lighting/background. And the strapless bra peeking out. And the grammatical mistakes in the captions. Oh, and Gromit is quite the critic. Without further ado, my dress.

Gorgeous! I would recommend coverblend or dermablend for covering up scars; I use both for mine. They are both designed for scar/tattoo coverup! I get all my stuff at Ulta. :)

I absolutely love this dress. I saw it last week, and I’ve been drooling over it ever since. It’s nice to hear that buying from that Web site worked out. I was considering it, but I’m very nervous.

Cute commentary on your pics! :-)

I think your dress looks AMAZING–just gorgeous!

For coverup, if you don’t use what Style Graduate recommends, you could try a tattoo coverup kit. They’re 1-time use and are about $25 or so, I think, but they’ll cover up any dark spot or scar that regular coverup can’t handle.

I didn’t have a weepy tears moment either, but I love my dress! And, I love yours–you just know it’s the one even if you didn’t cry a river of tears. It’s okay! :O)

I had to haev a pep talk with my BM’s about the whole not crying thing–I didn’t think it was normal. They affirmed (although one is an anti-bride bride, and one just isn’t the emotional type) that I was normal. :O) Thank you, BM’s.

Beautiful! My sister tried on several of Ulla’s dresses at Saks as well — apparently she makes dresses for petite brides which I hear are hard to find.

You look GORGEOUS! I love that dress and I’m so jealous of you being so tiny and cute in the dress.

And um honestly, I didn’t even notice any bacne scars.

Very very pretty dress. As for bacne scars - one time i got a bacial (a back facial) and the woman said that to get rid of the scars that i’d need to come in every few weeks or something and get microdermabrasian. There also some laser stuff that would probably work faster but it’s probably more expensive.

Maybe there’s a kind of makeup that wouldn’t rub off onto your beautiful white dress.

[...] It fits like a glove! I am so glad as I have horrible visions of SDBG (that’s Strapless Dress Boob Gap) in my head, especially since I have virtually no chest. Now all she has left to do is do the bustle and steam it. I’ll pick it up a few days before the wedding. [...]
