Two Dress Brides

November 2nd, 2006 @ 7:01 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

I have to admit: when I first started the dress search, I was somewhat puzzled when I heard of girls buying two dresses. “Couldn’t they just make up their minds the first time around?” I’d think, mentally calculating the $ involved to get two dresses. And yet, here I am now, with a dress on my hands that I am really not feeling that great about, and with the temptation to start up the search again hitting me full force.

Like some of the other ¢¢â€š¬‹Å“Bees, I’m slender and petite, so a visit to the average bridal salon pretty much meant drowning in white clouds of satin and lace. Don’t get me wrong; I know I’m blessed to not have to worry about losing weight and I’m thankful for that! However, I could never really tell what a dress would look like because of the size difference between the samples and myself. Thus, ordering any dress carried a risk that it would look completely different when it actually fit. Once I tried on my dress for the first time and felt a sudden letdown because it looked nothing like I had expected, I suddenly understood the position of the two-dress bride perfectly.

My dress doesn’t look BAD per se, but I’m feeling unsure about the style, which is fitted through the hip and has heavy beading, matching my personality. I’m holding my breath on some necessary alterations possibly making me feel better (the top threatening to fall with every step doesn’t help my vibes with the dress). Having a large church wedding, I know the dress is appropriately fancy, but I can’t help but recall all of the simple, elegant dresses I had liked so much before I made my choice and wonder if I should have defied tradition and gone with one of those instead.

I’ll definitely post more (and pictures, when I muster the courage to) on this later, but for now, I’d love to know where you all stand on this issue!

I know there are places in california that custom made wedding dresses. you may wannt to check them out b/c sometime the cost of alteration is included…actually, i am wearing more than one dress on my wedding day. I have seen several brides changed into 3-5 dresses.

i’m getting my two gownS custom made too and I was able to get the store to give me 2 free veil, one tiara, two jackets/shrugs, and of course, free alteration. The total cost for two gowns and everything else is $1800 (no tax): one high quality, embroidered, beaded satin (similar to silk/satin) and one full length lace. how much does your wedding gown cost? however, i’m paying for my BMs dresses so i’m in search of affordable dresses, any referrals?

It was an easy decision for me. I had already known that I didn’t want strapless and I wanted to show off my back. There were not alot of dresses that fit my criteria.

if i had second thoughts about my dress, i honestly wouldn’t hesitate about buying a second one. i think a dress is about how it makes you feel… and you should feel absolutely beautiful on your wedding day. :)

I am guilty of buying multiple dresses. But I would only buy a subsequent dress after returning or selling the previous one for the same price I paid. So… it’s not so crazy, right? ;-)

Girl, I am in exactly the same boat as you! I’m a tiny little thing, so it was really hard to judge how dresses would look. I chose a dress with a good amount of beading for the whole church reason as well. My dress is beautiful, and I really like it…but I think I might be a little to short to pull it off well. That and I keep thinking about those beautiful, simple dresses without so much glitz. :-( I feel too guilty to buy another dress, though, at least for the moment.

Thanks all for the replies! I still like my dress, I guess. Kind of. Maybe I’ve just been looking at it for too long?

My gown actually was not a huge expense to start with; it was not as important to me as, say, photography, so while we’re spending a ton on photos, the dress budget was under $700, and I actually got one below even that (not including those expensive alterations, however).

I’m thinking about my options… perhaps wearing a more romantic style (if I can get a very good deal) for our pictures a couple of months before the wedding and my current one for the actual day. Thanks for the support!

I am also slim and petite, and had the same problem when trying on sample dresses (most of which were size 10 or 12, when I would wear a size 4). It was hard to get an idea of what they would look like. After I ordered my dress, I had second thoughts…would a ballgown be overpowering on my short frame? Would the dropped waist make me look even shorter? Could I wear a strapless dress with my barely-A-cup boobs?

Even when my actual dress came in, I was unsure if I had made the right decision. The bodice wasn’t fitted, and the skirt was all wrinkled. But once I had padding installed up top, and the skirt hemmed, and the dress steamed, and I put it on the day of my wedding, I felt beautiful. :-) So, any doubts I had were unfounded; I think it’s natural to question your decision, though. I wish I could marry my husband a dozen more times just to get to wear that many more beautiful dresses!
