Doing My Own Makeup

November 3rd, 2006 @ 1:46 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

I’m toying with an idea here. Some may call me crazy, but I’m seriously considering doing my own makeup for the wedding. For real.

Here’s why:
1)My skin is even. I rarely get redness or blemishes or dry patches or anything that would take a lot of effort to hide (besides dark circles under the eyes, but I deal w/ that every day anyway).
2)I don’t ever like looking made-up. I’m a firm believer in enhancing natural beauty. That’s what I do day-to-day, and that’s what I’d like to look like for the wedding.
3)I’m cheap. From the research I’ve done so far, bridal makeup costs anywhere from $50-$300. And while I totally agree that hiring a makeup artist can be very worthwhile, and that they all do amazing work, I just can’t quite stomach the cost–I’d rather spend that money on things our guests will enjoy.
4)There’s no way to get my favorite makeup artist:

In a couple days here I’ll go buy some new foundation and mascara and then give it a shot. Pictures will be forthcoming :).

What do you think? Would you ever consider doing your own wedding makeup?

I am having a friend do it, and she said we could do as many trials as necessary and she wouldn’t be offended if I didn’t like it at all. I think I am saying “no” to mall make-up or a make-up artist. I support you, blue. :O)

I’m doing my own make up for my wedding next week. I never look like myself when i get my make up professionally done. My wedding day is one day i want to look like me. But I spent just as much if not more buying new make up to play with as I would to have someone else do it for my wedding day.

I am actually realy good at doing make-up..but I would never do my own make-up at the wedding. I want to look special and my abosolute best. And I don’t think I would be able to do that myself! :)

TOTALLY! I think it’s a great idea. I’ve heard of other brides going to their favorite makeup store/makeup counter, explaining the situation, and getting a “lesson” on how to apply makeup.

I definitely plan to do this myself. It’s win win because I will then buy the makeup that they’ve used on me (and have hopefully shown me how to effectively apply), so they sell makeup, and I will still save money on my makeup because I will get to keep the products. Obviously there will be much practicing in between the trial and wedding, but you get the idea.

I think it’s a great idea!

I like doing my own makeup, but I want to go with a professional just to make sure I don’t look washed out in pictures.

I’m having a friend do my makeup. Her mom owns a bridal shop and knows exactly how you need your face done so in the pictures you won’t look washed out :)

I heart What not to Wear!!

I say go for it. But make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to get ready. I was at our venue an extra 2 hours early and it still wasn’t enough time.

I was planning on doing my own makeup, but my cousin is a Mary Kay consultant and is going to do it for me. I am doing my own hair though. Good luck, Miss Blueberry!

I tried doing my own makeup took several pics and frankly I wasn’t impressed with my skill level. I talked to a few brides and they regretted not hiring a makeup artist. I broke down and hired a make up artist.

I would love to save the money, but I’m such a klutz with make-up that I’m going to have to put myself in the hands of a professional.

I’m going to do my own. Call me nuts, but having a makeup artist do it just doesn’t seem sanitary to me, even though almost everyone uses them. Even if they do wash their brushes after each use (which I don’t know if they all do), there are still oil and skin bits and bacteria from other people in the actual makeup - from when they dip the brush into the powder/blush/eyeshadow/etc, put in on you, then dip it back in the container. It just seems icky to me! I suppose if they used all of your own products, it would be better. I’m just planning to buy products that will work and then experiment. Also costs a lot less, and I get to keep the products.

Also, I think it’s a good idea to take pictures of yourself in different lighting with your own trial makeup so you can see what it will look like in pictures.

i am doing my own makeup. i did several makeup trials including mac and airbrush. i hated it. but, i’ve been doing my own make up forever. i know what i like. and with all the dance performaces i’ve been in, i’ve learned lots about makeup too. i did my own makeup for my bridals and loved it so i’ll do it the day of too.

It never occured to me to not do my own make-up, until I started looking at bridal magazines/websites. I guess I’m strange but it seems like a huge amount of money to spend for one day, when I know so many people that would love to help me out/ bond with me the day of my wedding.

A friend of mine went to MAC, got all the products she wanted to do it herself and a little lesson, and was fine to do her own makeup on her wedding day. My suggestion would be to give it a trial run, and have someone photograph you to see if you like how it looks. Best of luck! I love a frugal, confident bride.

I had a friend who did the same thing as Jules’ friend - went to a counter, got all the stuff she needed, and experimented like crazy. She also had numerous trials with professionals, and frankly, they made her look a tad like a hooker. So she did it herself, and it looked great. My only concern that expressed to her was whether she would be relaxed enough that day to do it herself, and thankfully she was.

I’m doing my own too. I’m definitely planning on taking pictures with different makeup and lighting to make sure it will look good! Like you, I just could not justify spending ~$350 for makeup when my skin is relatively clear and even on an everyday basis. If this was not the case, though, I think I would have thought more seriously about it. I think I may actually enjoy putting on my own makeup the day of the wedding — a little bit of downtime to reflect as the day starts. :)

I’ll probably have my makeup done but we did my sister’s makeup for her wedding and the makeup for two of my cousin’s weddings. Actually now you have me wondering why I’m tempting fate. I’ve never had my makeup done by someone else before.

Worst case scenario, it’s just a waste of money and I’ll have to redo it.

Oh, and I want false eye lashes and I totally can’t do those myself.
