Friends First? Dating An Ex?

November 3rd, 2006 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Bluebell

In Miss Kiwi’s inaugural post, both she and commenter JoyJoy mentioned how they had briefly dated their now-fiances years ago, broken up, and then later realized they actually DID have what it takes to make it work long term!

This is true for Mr. Bluebell and I too, which got me thinking…how common is it really? In both my & Miss Kiwi’s cases, we (the girls) were the ones to call things off in our earlier relationships, mainly because we were freaked out that Mr. Bluebell and Mr. Kiwi (respectively) liked us so much. Then, after a few years, we each looked back on that old boyfriend so fondly that we decided to try talking to them again, and almost instantly realized how right we had been for each other all along and never looked back.

Did you know your fiance/husband/”important person” prior to dating this time around? Did you date previously? Were you just friends? Did you break up, get back together, break up, get back together a million times?

How about a poll so we can see where we all stand!

In what capacity did you know your significant other first?

I’m actually in the same situation as you other bees. We met while pretty young and attending schools across the country from each other. While everything about us seemed right, the timing and circumstances were off, so I called it off. He said he was always sure. Right as both of us were settling into post-college life and happily single after having dated others inbetween, we happened to re-connect. We’ve been together ever since.

Do I even have to answer this? To be honest, I treated Mr. Kiwi so badly back then- I’m surprised he actually accepted me back! What he told me this time around? “I knew we’d end up together at some point.” How’s that for faith?

We were set up by his sister. Dated for a little bit…then I told him I saw him as my friend. I really felt that he liked me too much. I actually told a friend that he has all the qualities I would want in a husband, but it was creeping me out.

So I dumped him…but I called back and he was a good enough man to take my call. A few weeks later we were back on track…and now I get to marry the man of my dreams :)

We’re a match.com couple, so it was kind of dating from the start :D

We started officially dating three months after we met. I’m not sure if that’s fast or not.

The first time I met him, I knew he was special and I had a sense that something good was about to happen. However, there were times when I wondered how he could like me so much so quickly (because I just don’t operate that way myself), and had doubts. I was afraid he was just lonely and only liked me because I was around. Over time, those perceptions changed. I now know it wasn’t too good to be true, that I was just one of the lucky ones.

We were friends first.

But we broke up twice, the last one being a pretty nasty one.

We worked it out and it was worth all the heartache to get to where we are now. But it was very, very rocky start.

LOL, we we almost exactly the same as you and Miss Kiwi! :-) We started dating back in high school actually, and I freaked out at how serious he was (he’s only three years older than me, but he was a senior and I was a sophomore) so I broke it off. I like to say that the timing was just off. :-) I think I always knew we would eventually end up together though. I was just too young at that time.

FI always says, “If you didn’t break it off the first time, we would be celebrating X amount of years instead of Y.” :-P

Oooooooh! I just voted and then I saw the little shout out to Mr. Lily! I can’t wait to show him. He’s going to be mortified and excited all at once. So sweet!!! :-)

We started dating almost as soon as we met and really knew each other (we had met a few times in passing in the past). We broke up once for a month, got back together, and have been together and stronger than ever since that.

That shout out to Mr. Lily at the end was just so random, that it made me LOL! :D

My fiance and I were in the same class in junior high, but never dated. We met again 15 years later and the rest, as they say, is history.

And everyone else - keep the stories coming! I love hearing how people met!!

This gets a bit confusing….
We had Latin together when I was a sophmore in HS and he was a freshman. We “met” and started dating while working together in a grocery store. So I guess we were a work meeting couple! It’s funny but our grocery store spawned a few relationships.
