My Big Fat Greek Wedding

November 3rd, 2006 @ 10:02 am by Mrs. Strawberry

And when I say Greek, I mean sorority. Kappa Alpha Theta to be specific.

Yes, it’s true…. I was a sorority girl. I confess. For those of us who are members of such organizations, remembering your Greek affiliation may be important to you on your wedding day. Here are some ideas from Ultimate Wedding:

1. Wear your sorority pin on or under your wedding dress for good luck.

2. If your fiancee was in a fraternity he can wear his pin on his lapel or give it to you (if he hasn’t already) to wear with yours.

3. In your bouquet, carry the flowers of your sorority.

4. If your bridesmaids are sorority sisters you can give them one of your sorority’s special flowers to add to their bouquet or have them carry a whole bouquet of your sorority flower.

5. At your wedding reception be sure to get a photo of you with any sorority sisters in and at the wedding. Send the photo to your national magazine with your wedding announcement. (This is my personal goal! :) I’ve been trying to get in the magazine for years!)

I think Mr. Blueberry’s frat brothers will be enough of a “Greek” influence at our wedding :-P

I never went Greek, but I love these ideas–so sentimental! I hope they put you in their mag., Miss Strawberry!

When we attend sisters’ weddings, at the reception we stand in a circle around the bride and sing the last verse of one of our songs. It’s sounds really cheesy, but it’s very special. Don’t know if I will do this (or if I will have sisters who are willing to do this), plus I think I would cry.

LOL about the flowers — I think I’m going to try my best to avoid ANY sort of carnation anywhere at my wedding… which happens to represent my sorority and his fraternity… *sigh*

I don’t know if good old pansies would survive my wedding bouquet or BM’s–they are not very hearty. Maybe I can find a pansy pin…

I like the idea of wearing the pin under the skirt! You know we’ll bust out the mug song, Miss Strawberry, and will take a picture! We’ll get you in the mag.

I’m lovin’ the Theta shout-out, Miss Strawberry! I’m not sure that black and gold pansies would really work in my bouquet, but I think it’s a cute idea nevertheless. If my fiance hadn’t lost his fraternity pin years ago, I’m certain he’d probably be proudly wearing it during the ceremony.

It never even crossed my mind to have my sorority (Tau Beta Sigma, national honorary band sorority) pin in my dress somewhere. My FI and I are both members (it’s coed) and while we’ve grown away from the group of people who are currently in the chapter, it would be cool to remember that tie between us as we get married. On a side note, my FI is also a member of the Infant Cannibals, a group of rowdy tuba players in the UMR Miner Marching Band, and I am sure that Eat Babies will be spoken at least once during the reception. Plus we have to do the Vehicle dance… a marching band party tradition.

I may wear my sorority pin under my dress but my fiance REFUSES to give me his pin, he said everyone who got pinned in his frat had horrible break ups. Darn! I couldn’t get a pin during college and I can’t even get one now that I am marrying a frat boy.

For my wedding, I had a cake with candied pansies on it. Very pretty, very subtle, and yet still evocative of Theta. (I did multicolored pansies-didn’t just stick with black/gold.)
