About Mrs. Bird of Paradise

Unique & Memorable

November 6th, 2006 @ 12:18 pm by Mrs. Bird of Paradise

It seems lots of brides try hard to break the wedding mold. We try to have a memorable wedding where their guests have unique and special moments that they’ve never had before - whether it’s an acutal experience or a special thing such as the dress, cake or guestbook. Lots of brides are on the search for that all elusive **thing** that sets their wedding apart.

I thought it would be neat for us to share - What has been the most memorable wedding moment, idea, element, etc., from a wedding that you’ve personally attended?

I loved that instead of a guest book, the bride and groom requested notes be written and put into provided envelopes. they read them on the airplane on the way to their honeymoon- i felt so great being able to thank them for the party and loved picturing them opening their letters.

I know it’s not *new* but I really loved it.

This may seem a bit odd, but the bride’s gown from one fun wedding. Her bodice was from her mom’s wedding gown, and she had a skirt made that complemented it. It was just gorgeous…sort of Spanish-inspired, vintage, really amazing. It really reflected her personality and was just unusual and interesting enough to really stand out in my mind.

i went to a wedding where the the parents/family of the groom didn’t decide until 2 days before the wedding that they would be attending (because they were not in favor of the marriage). on the day of the wedding, during the ceremony, the bride and groom had a “suprise thank the parents” portion where they bowed down on the floor (poofy wedding dress and all) as a sign of thanks and respect to the parents. this is where the waterworks started happening. it was simply amazingly beautiful to see the brokeness being healed.

At one wedding I went to, the bride and groom announced they would not do the kiss on command thing. That is, UNLESS a whole table got up and serenaded them with a song with the word “love” in it. It was too funny!

I was at a wedding this past weekend, where instead of individual favors the bride and groom had fireworks for everyone to watch. Yes it was freezing but it was amazing! I would much rather remember standing out sidefreezing my butt off, glass of wine in hand watching the fireworks than a take home candle I will probably forget to take out of my car.

I attended a wedding several years ago (When I was 12; I’m 21 now) where the reception was held at Mount Vernon, the home of our 1st president, George Washington, and the fook was reminicent of the American Revolution time period! While I personally didn’t really enjoy the food, it’s the one thing I remember that set that wedding apart from all the others I had been to.

At my cousin’s wedding, a disposable camera was on each table with instructions to take photos of everyone there. I thought it was an amazing way to see everyone at the wedding and funny moments that a professional photographer could miss.

Although most of our guests spoke english, we celebrated my Korean-ness with a couple of great details. We had Korean food for cocktail hour, changed into hanboks (traditional Korean costume) for part of the reception, and my hubs (not korean) gave a little speech in Korean (*too cute*). We also made little explanations of Korean customs on the back of the menu card along with *korean lessons* for our guests. Both the Korean and non-Korean guests LOVED it. By the end of the day, we had people saying “thank you” to us in Korean.

At my own wedding I thought the most personal thing done was the fact that I signed a song from my new hubby. I have been studying ASL now for over 2 years as I train to be an interpreter of the deaf. My hubby has been with me through this long hard ardous road and has supported me not only with encouraging words but also by attending many deaf events with me even though he often was bored and confused as he doesnt know sign language. He always loved our signed concerts though as the songs were often popular songs and he could hear and see the signs and connect them together somewhat so to thank him for all that he did I signed a song from him in front of all our guests. He was so proud of me.

And I guess not to be outdone by me hubbys little borther and a few of his friends serenaded Bohemian Rhapsody to my hubby. That definetly brought down the house!

I also had a cherrys jubilee desert which they cooked with an open fire in front of all the guests That was a big hit

All in all I tried to make my wedding uniquely personal to my husband and I from the invitations with the postcards guests could draw on to my tree centerpieces to all the things I listed above. I really wanted this wedding to reflect both hubby and I as much as possible

Instead of having a traditional guest book where guests would sign their name, addres, etc. My cousin and her husband had a guestbook with a few of their engagement photo pics in a book, where guest could sign. It was like a yearbook, where one page was blank yet the other page was one of their engagement pics. It was such a cute idea! I know I’m doing that when I get married. Also, I love the idea of a picture slideshow. I had one for my debutante ball and my cousin had it for her wedding. She show pics of the bride and groom when they were young (baby, school pics) to when they first started dating to now. It’s cute! I know that another thing I will do!

My cousin’s wife got the wedding pictures from most of the married couple’s attending her wedding, including grandparents, aunts, uncles and family friend. She had them each framed and laid them out next to the guest book. It was so much fun looking at everyone’s wedding picture, laughing at crazy 70’s hairdos, etc. It was so sweet.
