Reader Buzz: Food

November 7th, 2006 @ 9:56 am by Reader Buzz

Mrs. Bee here.

When Mr. Bee and I first moved in together, all my family and friends asked what we ate day to day. I grew up eating Korean food pretty much every day of my entire life, so they knew that I couldn’t live without it. I also eat obscenely spicy - I put hot sauce on everything and my three favorite cuisines are Korean, Mexican and Thai.

Having different tastes in cuisine can be quite the challenge in a relationship since one of the main things people do in relationships obviously is eat. Luckily Mr. Bee and his family actually lived in Korea for some time when he was a kid, so he grew up eating Korean food practically every day himself. We’re also both carnivores and he can eat quite spicy too, so when it comes to cuisine, we’re pretty compatible.

What type of food/cuisine do you and your significant other typically eat together? Are you food compatible?

My fiance eats anything, his family calls him a trash disposal, I am more particular about my food but overall eat most things. I grew up in a traditional Chinese household so I ate some strange things (tripe, pigs ears, etc.) some of which, I still like today. My fiance freaks out when I eat the strange stuff and won’t eat sashimi or drink juice. I don’t really like foods that are spicy but I can appreciate a mildly spicy dish. Overall anyplace we eat I can find something on menu that I’ll eat. We both love Japanese (when it’s sushi I stick to California rolls), Thai, Indian, Korean, Chinese, etc. but the problem cuisine is Mexican. I just can’t seem to get it right except for the rice. So I’m the one ordering two sides of rice and guacamole when we go for Mexican.

I’m a vegetarian and Mr. Blueberry definitely isn’t, so that creates some dfficulty for us. When we go out it doesn’t matter, and we’ve learned to work around it when we’re staying in. We’ll order a pizza with half pineapple and no cheese (me) and half pepperoni (him), and he’s pretty open to trying vegetarian food that I make–especially when I cook Italian food! But I usually end up cooking something carnivorous for him, and then just making a boca burger or something for myself. :-P

We looove trying new restaurants and cuisines together… In fact, our vacations are centered around culinary experiences. We pick out where we want to eat first, and then plan our sightseeing around the restaurant’s location.. haha

Our favorite foods: Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Malaysian, Steaks & Burgers, Thai, French, Jamaican, Spanish tapas, Southern soul food, Fusion, New American, Experimental (a la WD-50)… We have very adventurous taste buds!!

We both agree that a good meal beats everything else, that different foods should be explored, and that a memorable dish is worth any price. I don’t know if I could be with a partner that didn’t feel the same way about food…!!

Mr. Kiwi eats everything, but I’m a vegetarian. So, he eats whatever I make. :) He will eat anything with sausage, and the idea of it is soooo gross to me. I’ve never eaten meat, and have only made him a chicken once- in rubber gloves! I guess we’re compatible in that I cook everything and he eats everything. :)

Miss Bluebell

Mr. Bluebell is such a foodie, and I am too to a lesser extent, so we both really enjoy trying different restaurants and cooking all sorts of things. I’m a vegetarian though and he isn’t, but it is virtually never a problem. If we order in or eat out, we just get our respective dishes, and he happily cooks and eats vegetarian at home, and enjoys experimenting with making all sorts of new vegetarian dishes. Since we both care so much about the collective act of eating, we never eat separate meals and always eat together and always the same thing if one of us is cooking. He was born and partially grew up in China, so his home diet was pretty much exclusively Chinese food, but by college he was already branching out a ton, so we probably eat Chinese only about once a week (when his Mom stocks us up with leftovers and frozen dumplings). He also pours hot sauce on EVERYTHING, which I hate, but it allows him to eat his food spicy without contaminating mine so it’s a perfect compromise for us. :-)

Yay for us vegetarian fruits, Miss Kiwi! lol :-)

I agree that sausage is *disgusting* but since I stopped eating meat when I was 12, I do remember when I ate it, and how I thought it was sorta yummy. But I’m not one of those anti-meat vegetarians, mostly just an “I don’t like meat and think it’s gross” vegetarians. I don’t mind fixing it for anyone else :-)

On the “high end” of things, we are very compatible–love cheeses, delicious pastas, all kinds of fine dining, etc.

On the everyday part, it’s a bit of a struggle. I grew up eating Chinese food and if there’s not a vegetable on my plate, I think it’s strange. I love Korean, Thai, Mexican–I just love food in general and like to try new things. FI on the other hand grew up eating pizza, fruit punch and…pizza. He can eat pizza 5X a week and doesn’t like fruits or vegetables. He has some food allergies and he is reluctant to try new foods. He didn’t even eat rice before he met me! I don’t know how it happened–but his sister is even pickier, so perhaps his family just didn’t emphasize food the way mine did.

Since I’m the one who cooks, though, he’ll eat what I make (heh heh) and while he’ll never stop loving pizza, I’m hoping someday he’ll accept and maybe look for more variety in his food life.

I’ve made it clear, though, that I really want our kids to eat healthy and be more adventurous (though you can’t always help the second part, hopefully I can set a good example). We’ll see!

fi has a medical condition that prevents him from eating spicy foods (which earned him a tongue-click from mom — hee!), so most korean food is out. i have to order for both of us and keep him away from the spicy banchan.

i am the more adventurous eater, but we can always find something to eat on every menu. eating rich food makes me queasy, so i normally order two appetizers rather than an entree.

we’re very opposite.. he’s very picky and i’m a huge foodie… so when i cook, i have to make sure he’ll like it.. it was a challenge at first but he likes what i cook and i’m slowly expanding his horizons.. however, we do both love italian food so we eat italian a lot, and at other times, i just have to make sure there’s something for him on the menu.. lately, i’ve been into korean bbq! he’ll eat kalbi, so that works out!

We both like eating whatever (we’re the anti-picky!), and I was very happy when I found out that FH isn’t really a meat & potatoes kind of guy. We try to eat veggie products most of the time, and meat and fast food occasionally.

And we both like spicy foods and stinky cheese, which is just awesome!

MY FI and I have similar eating habits so it hasn’t posed a problem yet, unless you count my having gained 15 poinds since we’ve been together a problem. Who cooks what hasn’t really been an issue either because he makes a mean yookejang (korean spicy beef soup) that I love, and he will eat just about anything I make as long as there is meat in it.

People thinks its strange but my fi and I have lived together for 3 years and we just make separate meals.

Part of it is that I am trying to lose weight, but in general we have different tastes. So we eat together, but cook separate things most days.

But neither of us are real cooks, so its mostly microwaving anyway.

When my fiance and I first moved in together, he was a very picky eater and not very adventerous meaning he was very very hestiant to try new things. I on the other had grown up in a home where the rule was you had to try everything at least once before saying you wouldn’t eat it. And so as an adult I an adventerous eater.

Lucky for me (and for my fiance) I am very charming and have gotten him to open up totally to trying new things and becoming a real foodie like me. His parents were amazed because they never could get him to eat vegtables like he should I managed to get him to eat them on a regular basis!

He has gotten me to like things I didn’t think I would like. I have tried most seafood and not liked it at all. The flavor and texture has always icked me out. But since I always force him to try stuff, it was only fair that I try things too. So I have learned I like crab and lobster. As he said “Well of course you like the most expensive kind of seafood.”

completely unrelated to the post, i have a question for the beehive. on a preemptive side note, i am single, but i read weddingbee religiously. :)

so i am a fairly tall girl and i love to wear ridiculously high heels (3 to 4 inches) and i like to date taller guys. but for the most part, i’ve always dated guys exactly my height, which is a bit of a sore point with me because i like to feel “womanly” and all that jazz. so in a roundabout way, my question would be what do the weddinbee ladies and readers think about the height issue? how many of ur men are shorter or of equal height with you?

We have similar tastes, but he likes lots of peppers in everything, and I can’t stand peppers! We always eat the same meal though. Who ever is cooking will fix my plate, then finish his portion off with whatever extras he adds in.

DH is the more adventurous eater, which is fine with me!

We’re pretty compatible for the most part. There are little things that I don’t like to eat (tomatoes, bananas, etc) and things he doesn’t like to eat (VERY FEW!), but its easy to get around those and have a meal that we both like. We LOVE fine dining, too. When Santana Row first opened, we made it a point to try all of the restaurants out.

I think our largest incompatibility food wise is that I LOVE spicy foods and have an amazing tolerance for them. FI loves spice, but he definitely can’t handle as much as I can. I can eat a spoonful of habanero sauce and think “YUM!” If FI dabbed is tongue on a little bit of that same sauce he’d be dying! :-P
