Freshman Fifteen? Try Thirty!!

November 8th, 2006 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Hibiscus

Unfortunately in undergrad, I was one of the lucky girls who fell victim to the freshman fifteen - the dreaded 15 pound weight gain many women experience their first year in college. The sad part is, this is one of the few things I excelled at in my academic career. I gained a total of 30 pounds in college. It was… noticeable to say the least.

I’m not exactly super model height here. At a whopping 5 foot 2 inches, that was a significant chunk of my body weight. I’m not saying I didn’t deserve it. My diet was horrible. I ate a box of macaroni and cheese for dinner (by myself), burgers and fries for lunch and I drank about 5 regular sodas a day. The rest of my diet consisted of platefuls of rice and breadsticks from various pizza chains. Behold, the evidence of this.. (I can’t believe I’m posting this!!)

Fast forward to grad school where I get engaged. (Mr. Hibiscus really does love me since he wanted to marry me even though I was um… bigger than when he met me) I found myself looking at old pictures of my cousin’s wedding. I was a bridesmaid and only 18 years old. I looked fabulous! I fit perfectly into my size 4 bridesmaid dress and my arms were toned. Then it hit me. I couldn’t allow myself to look better at my cousin’s wedding than my own. Something had to be done. I needed to take control.

I bought the Southbeach Diet book and attempted phase 1 alone. I didn’t tell anyone about my diet. I felt admitting I was dieting was like shouting to the world I was fat. I felt if I never said anything, no one would notice. Well, I was a Southbeach dropout after only 2 days. Three months later, a good friend of mine started talking about diets and how she heard the Southbeach diet worked for her friend. I tried not to participate in the conversation but I finally admitted I was a dropout. Then, she had the brilliant idea to do it together and support each other through the phases.

I’ll give you some background information about the diet. There are 3 phases, the first phase being the most strict and lasting 2 weeks. Those first 2 weeks are meant to help people quit craving carbs. Highly processed carbs, according to the book, get digested too quickly. This causes insulin levels (a hormone the body uses to process sugars) to spike. Once those fast-burning carbs are used up, your high insulin level makes you crave more food. They say you can lose up to 15 pounds in phase 1, although most people lose between 8 and 12 pounds. Realize though, if you weigh less this may not be the case for you.

Phase 1 approved foods: Lean cuts of beef, fat free cheese, eggs, lamb, skinless turkey and chicken breast, most fish, vegetables (minus corn, potatoes and carrots), sugarfree candy, popsicles and fudgesicles
NO FRUIT, STARCHES AND CARBS, DAIRY OR ALCOHOL!

On day 4, I was suffering from carb withdrawal, but all it took was a phone call to my diet buddy and she set me straight. To make a long story short, I lost 12 pounds in the two weeks. This motivated me so much, I started working out and during phase 2, I lost more weight.

I dropped 3 dress sizes and have kept the weight off. It definitely was a lifestyle change for me though. I don’t eat burgers and fries anymore - the staple foods in my college diet. I eat about 1/3 of the rice I used to, and I have switched to diet sodas and wheat bread. The diet definitely wasn’t “easy,” but it was doable and having a buddy definitely helped. I couldn’t have done it without her. Oh, and sugarfree fudgesicles… couldn’t have done it without them either. haha

I have 10 more pounds to go to get back to my pre-college weight. These pounds are definitely the hardest. I’m running 2 miles about 3 times a week now to get me off my plateau. Hopefully this works! Look out wedding dress… here I come!!

Current Me at a size 4!

So my questions are, has anyone tried a diet that has worked for them? And, how are you losing weight for the wedding?

This is very inspiring. I’ve gained 25 pounds since highschool and am getting married in 10 months. I’ve got some time but need to take the weight off. I think I’ll give South beach a try.

Great job! Wish I had refreshed before I ate half of that muffin haha. I will try the southbeach diet–I’ve gained 10lbs (my previous weight loss) since being with FI, so I’m back at my college weight :-( I lost the weight the first time by eliminating sugar.

I’ve gained 15 lbs since high school, and while I was underweight then, I could still stand to lose a few of the lbs I have on me now. I have clothes that range from 2-6 and which ones I where seems to vary week to week. Very frustrating. It doesn’t help that there’s nowhere safe to run in our neighborhood (thanks to 1970s planning - who needs sidewalks when you can drive the 3/4 miles to the store!). The whole town is that way. Ugh.

Can’t wait to get back up to New England and back to my jogging habits!

I need to go on a diet too… I dont think I need to loose weigh per se, but I need to loose FAT that has built up since college. I don’t have much time to exercise at all so I think a diet will be the best…

Congrats.. you look great! I tried the SBD too a little while back.. I lost about 8 or so pounds on Phase I, in Phase 2, when I tried slowly introducing ‘good carbs’ back into my diet, I totally failed!… I’m a carb lover and I had carb overload after being in withdrawl for the 2 weeks. I do believe that this diet does work.. I did it alone too & without telling anyone.. so, I’m sure that having a buddy will definately help.

I’d like to try it again… although I just remember the 1st 2 weeks were killer!

I totally hear you on the freshman 15…except I gained all 15lbs in my first quarter (ouch!). Being a scientist, I researched the heck out of weight loss methods, and I devised a plan for myself. I lowered my calorie intake to a doable amount, ate small meals 6 times a day instead of 3 larger ones and ran 6-8 miles a week (well, I used an elliptical most days, but the sentiment is the same). That totally did the trick.

Now that I’m graduated and working, I don’t have time to keep up that same routine. I definitely can’t get out of the lab often enough to eat 6 times a day. Your progress with SBD is really encouraging me to check it out! You look hot! :-)

Congrats Miss Hibiscus you look great!

I’ve been using sparkpeople.com, which is a totally FREE website that works much like weight watchers in that it’s basically just tracking the foods you eat, and eating everything in moderation. I feel like it’s helping me make a lifestyle change that I will (hopefully) be able to keep up.

Yeah for you. You sound like you have found a lasting solution. All of the talk of Vow to be Fit around here has made me nervous. I’m taking nutrition classes and plan to become a registered dietitian and the quick fix diets just don’t last. You look fantastic! Knowing that healthy eating is a lifetime change and not a “diet” is so key in managing your weight. I’m glad to hear that you are exercising too. They go hand in hand. You will be a BEAUTIFUL bride.

I do a variation of what’s called the Sacred heart diet… you can google it for more info. Here’s the lowdown on the Sacred Heart Diet: no carbs, eat as much of this tomato/veggie soup, and stick to what the diet says to eat on specific days. Essentially, you go carb cold turkey. I wound up losing 20 pounds. These days, I resort back to a variation of this diet when I need to shed a quick 5 pounds to look great in a dress or something.. Anyways, you look awesome! you rock!

So how long are phases 2 & 3? I think you look wonderful by the way! I have been lamenting over my weight gain since I started working for AAA- we’re talking 20-25 lbs in the past year or so. :( I need to jump start my weight loss and get back into shape. Details details!

That’s funny… I actually lost a lot of weight during my Freshmen year, because I missed home cooking food so much and the nasty cafeteria food just didn’t cut it for me. However, I put on a lot of weight after I meet my bf… he kept taking me out to dinner and spoiling me with good food. I need to find a good diet that works for me. Perhaps I should just exercise…..
