Mr. Strawberry’s Addiction

November 9th, 2006 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Strawberry

Mr. Strawberry is addicted to chapstick. Quite literally. If he doesn’t use it — his lips dry up and crack. He’s gotten up in the middle of the night to go to the store if he runs out. Sometimes, I tease him and hide his chapstick. He gets kind of upset though and I have to give it back immediately. :) I’m trying to buy a case of it for him for Christmas - I’m totally feeding into his addiction.

Last night, I had the brilliant idea to have a groom’s cake in the shape of a giant chapstick. Not sure if that would go over well.

I’m not sure, but i think Chapstick is made with petroleum. I think a lot of people feel that it relevievs dry lips, but actually contributes to making them more dry. If your going to by a case for him, make sure it’s a lip balm without petroleum.

I think the cake is a great idea…especially if everyone is aware of addiction…Too cute~~

just curious, where did you learn that petroleum contributes to drying out rather than moisturizing? im one of those ppl who think petroleum would help ie - vaseline petroleum jelly… ive used it on my hands when my hands were calloused and they healed great and brought back moisture. just two days ago my bf complained of chapped lips that were cracking and chapstick wasnt helping him at all so i had him try sleeping w/ vaseline on his lips and they were fine by morning. vaseline is 100% petroleum jelly and among other things, its supposed to protect from wind burn and chapping and heal dry skin… and in my experience it has.

of course, im talking about “100% petroleum jelly” so i have no say about petroleum IN chapstick, but gotta defend my vaseline!

found this online:

“Camphor and alcohol are effective ingredients, but they also tend to dry out the skin over time. Since chapsticks and lip balm manufacturers tend to emphasize their moisturizing abilities, this can be a sticky situation. Many chapstick and lip balm formulations try to minimize this sensation of dry lips, but they’re not always successful. Users apply a coat of chapstick and experience relief because the natural microfissures and cracks are filled with soothing emollients and/or medications like camphor. A waxy coating forms which repels wind and water, and the user feels protected. But a few minutes later, the alcohol or camphor begins to evaporate and the wax is absorbed into the skin. This leads to a feeling of dryness around the lips, which means a re-application of the chapstick or lip balm. For some consumers, this leads to a never-ending quest for relief. This constant re-application of chapstick or lip balm is the phenomenon others see as an addiction. It’s not a classic addiction in the worst sense of the word, but it can become a very difficult habit to break if not corrected. ”

Seems like it’s the alcohols in the chapstick (or some other ingredients) that might cause a problem.

Personally, I swear by the body shop’s coconut lip butter. :)

I think it depends on how he feels about his addiction to chapstick. If he doesn’t think it is a big deal, it would be cute. But I know if it were my fiance that would be the kind of thing he wouldn’t want to be a public thing. Guys can be more sensitive about people drawing attention to their grooming habits unlike us girls who tend to spend whole days at Sephora shopping for grooming supplies. Ohhh Sephora *dreamy look*. Just my two cents.

I think it would be cute to have a chapstick grooms cake since he’s so into it. As long as you think he would get mad about it or overly embarassed.

On the not wedding side of things, I agree that chapstick is really not that good for you. I read a paper (published in a scientific journal) about how there’s an ingredient in chapstick that gets absorbed into the body and causes deposits on the bones. Something like that. I should look for that again…

You are lucky! I can’t get a chapstick anywhere near my guy’s lips and I’ve tried force. I love them though and I have one in my pocket at all time at work.

Too bad he’s not into it…that would be the cutest groom’s cake ever! :-P

I’m a chapstick addict, too…but I like to try different flavors…esp. Bonne Bell :-D Yeah, it’s like 6th grade all over again, hehe :-)

Mr. Blueberry has already agreed to carry a tube of Chapstick in his tux for me on our wedding day, since I’m not carrying a wedding purse and the Chapstick is my only necessity :-P

I would die without chapstick. My mom even gives me a hard time because I have no “color” in my lips (she’s a lipstick addict) and I just refuse because lipstick DRIES ME OUT!

I have a tube in my desk drawer, next to bed, in my purse, and in one of the downstairs end tables. If I don’t have it…don’t mess with me. ;-) Glosses and shines won’t do. You all understand. :-)

That traditional black tube reminds me of my grandpa because he used it INCESSANTLY and kept it everywhere…the smell is so distinct…must be the West in me that keeps me addicted, too!

i heard fresh’s lip balm is to die for and because it really moistens, you dont need to keep reapplying. :)

I want to agree that ˘˘â€š¬…”Chapstick˘˘â€š¬? has alcohol, which makes your lips more chapped! It’s a vicious cycle and you have to break him of it! Try C. O. Bigelow “My Favorite Lip Balm,” a much better choice.

wondering about vaseline

Is Vaseline (White Petroleum Jelly) overall bad for your lips too? Does it eventually dry them out too? I have a crack in my lip that wont fully heal, but the vaseline does keep it from cracking worse..

I just want to know if using vaseline is a bad idea..

I too WAS a lip balm addict! Nothing worked and I would re-apply constantly! Then I was given LanoLip lip balm at my dental office…. I was cured! You should really check out http://www.LanoLip.com … it is a new Natural Lip Balm with NO WAX! LanoLip’s key ingredient is medical grade lanolin. It works to heel and protect against further damage. I came across LanoLip with I had been prescibed Acutane for acne and it not only dried out my acne but dried my lips out so badly that they would bleed and crack. It was torture. Anyway, I put LanoLip lip balm on thick at night and it is still there in the morning! 100% guarantee to work!
