Open Question: First Dance

November 9th, 2006 @ 12:24 pm by Open Question

Hello Bees,

I’m not sure if anyone else is having this problem but I need some help.

A few months ago, my FH and I decided on ¢¢â€š¬…”You and I¢¢â€š¬? by Michael Buble as a first dance song. While it is okay on its own, the more I listen to it the less I like it. It’s a beautiful song but I don’t feel like it really ¢¢â€š¬…”means¢¢â€š¬? anything to us.

See, my FH and I have very different tastes in music - FH likes country and what I consider slightly cheesy music. I love public radio stations, the Grateful Dead, Jazz and just about everything else besides what he likes…

We don’t really have a song that we can call ¢¢â€š¬…”Our Song¢¢â€š¬? but here are a few besides the Michael Buble that we are thinking about:

¢¢â€š¬…”Follow You, Follow Me¢¢â€š¬? - Genesis

¢¢â€š¬…”Better Together¢¢â€š¬? - Jack Johnson

¢¢â€š¬…”Be Mine¢¢â€š¬? - David Gray

¢¢â€š¬…”Maybe I’m Amazed¢¢â€š¬? - Paul Mc Cartney

¢¢â€š¬…”By Your Side¢¢â€š¬? - Sade

Still, nothing hits me. Any suggestion or thoughts?

Thanks!

Erin

I’m biased as I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Jack Johnson - Especially “Better Together” but I keep thinking about how different that would make your dance. Is that what you’d want or is that the opposite?

What about something “classic” like “the way you look tonight” or “when I fall in love”

Better Together - Jack Johnson is on our list too…FH like “Crush” by Dave Matthews too…
I would like Better Together b/c of the ‘different’ type of first dance you would do (we are having it choreographed) and the lyrics are SOOOO beautiful - PERFECT wedding song IMO…but we don’t know what we are going to do yet…

Oh another idea would be Rascal Flatts “Day Before You” for the country -type theme….there’s also a song from the movie “The Wedding Planner” called “Plan on Forever” which is cute if you met in an unexpected way. Also “Heaven” by Bryan Adams is cute and sappy but not too cheesy sounding. There are also newer versions of it that might suit your tastes. Other ideas would be “Don’t want to Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith (your sound…his sappy) or “Could Not Ask for More” by Edwin McCain. Or “All My Life” by K-Cee and JoJo. Just thoughts

My husband and I like a little of everything. We didn’t have an “our” song either. We aimed for a song with lyrics that meant a lot and in the end decided on I Cross My Heart by George Strait.

“Love that will last ” by Renee Olsteadt is our first dance song. It has jazzy tone on it….check it out

If your fiance likes Country, how about ‘I could not ask for more’ by Sara Evans? The song is so beautiful when she sings it (I think Edwin McCain sang it originally and that version is just as beautiful). You can hear and watch both versions here a clip of it right here-

Hmm.. I guess the websites didn’t show up.. just type in either artist’s name and ‘I could not ask for more’ on youtube.com and you can hear both versions.

I agree with Jennifer. If you don’t share the same tastes in music a classic love song like one of Sintras, you can’t go wrong. I always liked Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers but it is technically about a guy in prison or something so maybe not so good.

Our song is “Such Great Heights” as covered by Iron & Wine. The lyrics fit us perfectly and Iron & Wine slow the song down a bit from the Postal Service version so it will be an awesome first dance.

I know a lot of couples who have this issue–I think that “Better Together” is a great first dance song if you want something more casual, but this is also a great time to find a cover of a classic “cheesy” song by someone more indie. And if nothing else fails, the Beatles are always classic and hip.

We so do not have the same taste in music either - I like JT and he likes Wilco. Like several people have suggested, we are going the classic route, since we did agree that we didn’t want a very trendy wedding song (if that makes sense). We’ll be dancing to “What A Wonderful World.”

To be honest, dance songs (be it our first dance or my dance with dad) just weren’t important to me. Maybe I lack heart. In any event, we did Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” because the band already knew it.

I like the song.. “You and Me” by Lifehouse. I’m hoping I can convince my fiance to go along with it. But there’s another song that I really like too that I know he likes… it’s not really a wedding song though… Chasing Cars by some dude i uh… dont remember the name.

but part of me wants to find an upbeat song, so i agree with everyone else - you can’t go wrong with classics like sinatra.

if you two have different tastes in music, maybe the both of you can agree on the lyrics? find a song that has meaningful lyrics that parallel how both of you feel?

FI loves “You and Me” by Lifehouse.

But, my top two faves for first dance would be Ben Fold’s “The Luckiest” and Howie Day’s “Collide”

I recommend: “That’s How Strong My Love Is” By Otis Redding. Its a classic, and Van Morrison covers it too. I absolutely love the song, have heard it at 2 different weddings, and will likely use it myself (oh wait, I’m not a bride….)

We didn’t have a first song either, plus my fiancee vetoed most classics because he thought they were too overplayed (no Frank Sinatra).

My hang up was the dance itself–I searched “first dance” on Youtube and watching other couples have their first dance was usually excruciatingly painful–bad dancing, overly emotive music. In the end, we decided on the *type* of dance we wanted (cha cha) and picked a song that was good for the dance. (After watching all those dances on Youtube, I decided that the only real crowd pleaser is a fast dance with some great choreography, so that’s what we did..people’s jaws dropped and they are still complimenting us on it).

If you’re not partial to the original version, Jem does a beautiful rendition of Maybe You’re Amazed.

FI and I had a hard time choosing our song too, but luckily we have similar tastes. We wanted to use something a little off the beaten path, but that was still meaningful (and of course from an artist that we both liked). We ended up choosing “Didn’t Know I Was Looking for Love” by Everything But the Girl. (Haha, that’s a mouthful!) The lyrics mean a lot to us b/c as cheesy as it sounds, we really did meet when we both least expected it!

I LOVE “Come Away With Me” by Norah Jones, and think it would make an excellent first dance song = )

P.S. Snot, “Chasing Cars” is by snow patrol, and I also love that one, along with both “you and me” and “collide”.
