Which Scent Makes Sense?

November 9th, 2006 @ 5:03 pm by Mrs. Violet

Miss Plumeria posted about her wedding scent today. I always assumed that I would be wearing my favorite scent, Eclat D Arpege by French designer Lanvin. I was never huge on perfume - probably because I never found anything I liked. But on a random trip to Saks one day, the perfume lady gave me a scent card. I loved it right away. I wanted to buy it right then and there, but it was pretty expensive for such a small bottle.

I slowly walked out of the store without buying it. The scent card stayed with me though and I kept taking it out and smelling it. I told Mr. Violet about it and I didn’t expect him to get it for me, but a few days later, I had my most favorite perfume ever.

Here lies the dilemma. I received a beautiful bottle of Lalique 2006 Les Fees Perfume for Christmas last year. It’s really a beautiful bottle and fragrance. I’ve never used it (it’s a limited edition) and I guess I’ve been saving it for special days. I actually have it safely stored away right now.

If I reserve this perfume for my wedding day, every time I use this fragrance again, it will most likely bring back my wedding memories. Since I use the Arpege all the time, it won’t be as special. Right? Then again, the Arpege is really my favorite and has such a cute story - Mr. Violet went to several Sephoras to look for it and couldn’t find it and then ended up buying it at Saks.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t a big deal, but what is a girl to do?

just yesterday i smelled Arpege and decided that i was going to get it after the wedding! if the Lalique smells good, i’d use that for the special occasion.

i’ll have to try that! i’m not a perfume person and rarely wear it. so i don’t think i’ll wear any on the wedding day cuz i know that some people get a little headache from it. (i’m one of those too.) so i think i’ll stick to yummy smelling body wash! :D

i’m freaking out about the dress. do you know if david’s do exchanges for size? i think i need a different size, no altereration places will do adjustments as much as i need. :( ack. is your dress still fitting?

i wish i would have met up with you while i lived in woodside! i think i’ll have a weddingbee get-together eventually. :)

Why not create your own signature scent and call it Wedding Day? See our website for details!

I LOOOVE D’Arpege (it’s my favorite also) but I would agree and say use the Lalique for your wedding. :-)

Thanks for all the comments so far ladies!

Jin104 - That’s good to hear. When I tell people about it, i usually get a blank look. Apparently it’s not too popular here in the US.

i think you should go for the perfume that you will enjoy thinking of in the future, as it reminds you of your precious wedding…if not, just go with whatever you choose the day of! ;)

i think the one you wear less often would be nice for the special day.

at first i thought it was silly to buy a “day of” scent, but more and more i’m excited about finding something scrumptious that will remind me of that day :) i think thats a great idea!

I wear Eclat D Arpege every day and haven’t tired of it.. i’m on my second bottle in a year. My bf says he smelled it once while walking in a mall and it made him turn to see if it was me…

maybe you should wear the one your FI associates with you more?

I love the bottle of the second one! :) I think I would buy it just to have the bottle. I am such a sucker for artsy packaging… if you use it, be sure to have your photographer get a pic of the bottle too, maybe with your wedding jewelry and garter!

I love the idea of reserving a fragrance for your wedding day (or wedding related events: i.e., rehearsal dinner, bridal shower, engagement party, wedding & honeymoon) - I am wearing Creed’s Love in White (IMO it’s PERFECT for a summer wedding) - I’ve worn it to my Engagement Party back in June & do not plan on wearing it again until my bridal shower. I am looking forward to being reminded of my wedding every time I wear it after my wedding….

Miss Plum - I already have 2 scents I’m trying to dispute over, no need for another one to throw into the loop! haha..

Thanks so much ladies for your wise advice. I still haven’t made up my mind, maybe i’ll ask Mr. Violet for his opinion.

“Researchers know that odors don’t trigger memories that are any more accurate than the memories triggered by other stimuli, but odors do trigger memories that are more emotional.”

You might want to consider a scent for your reception as well. I can still remember the sedona wedding for its scent of mesquete, palm springs for lemon and licorice, etc. Creating that trigger for guests as well is a very memorable touch.
