Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Musings Regarding Engravings

November 10th, 2006 @ 5:47 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

On my first dance song post, I wrote about the song that’s too sad to dance to at our wedding. Mr Kiwi has since rejected the song, and is tossing around some of his own song ideas. It’s nice to have a fiance who will discard your ideas with some helpful ideas of his own. :) Not sarcasm, I promise. :) Anyway, I still want to work that Death Cab song into our wedding. See, although it’s a song, and songs come and go in popularity, the words spoken in this song just say so succinctly what I feel for Mr. Kiwi.

Even though our lives are just beginning, I still feel that I have been so blessed for knowing him (and I’m not a religious person). And if it were to all end tomorrow, I would be happy. Now, this isn’t the most upbeat of things to say or feel right now with less than a year to our wedding, but when I hear that song, I feel like something is working out for us. Perhaps that’s why I was so attached to the song - the melody was lovely, but the words could have come out of my own heart.

This has lead me to think about what to engrave in Mr. Kiwi’s wedding band. I’ve always wanted something meaningful, something for the two of us to get. For ahile, it was “I choo choo choose you,” which is a line from a Simpson’s Episode. Another was a slightly embarrassing inside joke, “Look What I can Do!”

Now though, coming upon this song, I think I will use the line, “I will Follow You” with the wedding date. Perhaps “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” is a little morbid. On another website I belong to, a girl was contemplating engraving a Dave Matthews band lyric into their bands. A bunch of people were saying that the lyrics would be outdated in a few years and they would look back on the time they got engraved as something slightly embarrassing, even though the words were “Steady As We Go” which can be taken as something completely different, but still meaningful.

Now, tell me, do you think I should engrave our bands with “I Will Follow You?” Do you believe some wedding band engravings will be outdated as time goes by?

I say stick with the Ralph Wiggum line. That will never be outdated!

We just did 08.19.06. I was afraid anything else would get dated. For non-Ben Gibbard fans, “I will follow you” may sound more submissive than romantic. ;)

OMG. I LOVE the Ralph Wiggum line! FI and I always toss that one around on Valentines Day. I even found a box of chocolates one year with a train that said “I choo choo choose you!” (and it wasn’t simpsons related at all), so ofcourse I gave that to him. I’m going to have to steal that idea…

As for the “I will follow you”…I can see how it would sound sweet…but I can also see how it would sound scary. As in stalkerish scary. I’m sorry. I’m terrible! It’s just that when I read it, I pictured a Mr. Kiwi walking around with a Miss Kiwi sneaking around behind him (not that I know what you look like). Oh gosh. I’m really sorry. It was the first thing that popped into my head… :-/

Ha ha ha, glad you all see the Wiggum! Yeah, I think that’s a good one, too. Me thinks the Death Cab will just have to die a fast death wedding-wise. Although… when I came home from work today, Mr. Kiwi was learning to play “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” on the guitar. Isn’t that the freakin’ cutest thing ever? So I should just set the song as my ringtone and let it go. :) Kidding! I can’t replace the Duke’s of Hazzard theme song!! Anyway, okay, you’ve convinced me. NO MORE DEATH CAB. :)

I thought engraving “I Will Follow You” would be a cute way to incorporate that song into your wedding (maybe it also has to do with the fact that I don’t watch The Simpsons). But after JoyJoy’s comment, I can picture the scariness (you’re such a weirdo! haha jk) but as long as Mr. Kiwi doesn’t think that way, I think it should be fine. =) That’s just my opinion though.

Okay, update: Mr. Kiwi likes the idea!! Still, don’t want it to be dated. Dilemma!!!

I think “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” isn’t morbid, but more of a definitive commitment. No one sees anything wrong with “til death do us part.”

Haha, JoyJoy’s image is all I see now!! I think it could be cute, though, but as for dated…not sure. Imagine yourself explaining to your grandchildren why your engraving says what it says and decide if you care if they have any clue what you’re talking about or not. :-)

hahaha. i choo choo choose you. the simpsons rock. why did i immediately say, “let’s bee friends” right after i read that? ;-)

why would the line be dated? if this is something that you feel could have been said from your heart, then you’ll always feel that way and it’ll never be dated. i mean, these are heartfelt words, not acid wash jeans and teased hair.

the significance will always be there for you and mr. kiwi. and that’s what matters. who cares what other people may say. i mean, me and my bf’s official song is sade’s no ordinary love and that’s technically about a breakup…though the bf managed to concoct another meaning that strangely makes sense. i think i may have found someone weirder than i am.

but i love the idea of “i’ll follow you” it’s very sweet and romantic.

My DH’s ring engraving is from a Chris Cagle (country) song. “Look What I Found” is the title of a song about how I wasn’t looking for anything, but I turned around and there you were. We love the words of the song and will always know what it means. For real, who is going to ask you what’s in his ring in a year, much less 5 or 50 down the road?

Miss Kiwi, I’ve listened to that Death Cab song SEVEN TIMES tonight! I’m a weirdoooo!

For reals, now…How can a line from a song that meant so much to you (since you stated “Perhaps that’s why I was so attached to the song - the melody was lovely, but the words could have come out of my own heart”) be outdated? To me, that’s like saying that engraving “I love you” is outdated. They’re timeless words that come from the very center of both of your hearts. Don’t look into so much! It’s something that is obviously special to both of you (i.e. he’s already trying to learn it on guitar!), so what’s it matter what anyone else thinks? It’s your lifetime with the love of your life, not anyone else’s.

K, I’m off my soapbox. ;)

Awwwww… thanks so much!!! You guys are great. I really like that whole line..”I will follow you into the dark”. Well, we have less than a year until the wedding, more than enough time to chew on it. :)

I thought “I will follow you” was sweet - I didn’t get a stalkerish vibe at all. I was thinking of that old song, “I will follow him…follow him wherever he may gooooo.”

I put “Wonderful” and the date in my husband’s ring. That’s a nod to the Adam Ant song, which is actually about a breakup, regret, and some domestic violence! But we have a special memory that goes with it that’s very sweet, so I used it. :)

plus, engraving lyrics won’t be outdated if it means something special to you. when my aunt heard a burnt cd of mine of 90’s music i got from my old roommate, she and my uncle got all excited and copied it because it brought back memories for them of the time when the dated. if it’s meaningful to you, it will always bring a happy memory for you, a reminder of your wedding and the time in which it took place.

I think that an engraving inside your band is something that only you and your husband will know about - choose the quote for the meaning it has to you both now, and you’ll always know what it means.

Your perception of the words isn’t going to go out of style.

That steady-as-we-go song isn’t brand new, but it’s a nice quote and I’m sure the people that chose it won’t regret it at any point in their lives.
