Open Question: Wearing Black

November 10th, 2006 @ 4:42 pm by Open Question

Hi! I loooooove your website.

I just had a general question - what is your take on wearing all black to a wedding? It’s a Catholic wedding set in the afternoon at a church. The reception starts at 3PM, and dinner is served at 5PM. I was going to wear a black wrap around a black dress. Should I?

Thanks,

YM

I also have a catholic wedding that I’m going to this weekend. I too will be wearing a black dress with a black wrap, but my shoes and necklace are pink to offset the black. Pick a colorful accessory item to give your outfit a little pop.

If you like purple, try a dark fall colored purple wrap instead of a black one. But with maybe a cute black ball necklace.

I say go for it! Black is very popular right now and isn’t automatically associated with funerals like it once was. If you’re still self-conscious, try accenting it with lively (but still tasteful) accessories–some awesome red shoes, maybe? Have fun with the black :-)

I always wear black to weddings - haha - but I think the general rule is that if it’s an evening weddings, it’s perfectly acceptable - so long as you’re not head to toe in black (gloves, sunglasses, large floppy hat, etc) :)

I don’t think it’s a problem as long as your outfit isn’t depressing - whether it be a cute style, shows some skin (appropriate amount), beading, or etc. And I always add some color in accessories - but I don’t think it is necessary.

No problem at all. I don’t even buy the “wear-a-colorful-accessory” b.s. Black is always appropriate. The only peeps who don’t think so are old fogeys from non-metropolitan areas.

My best friend’s brother is getting married in 2 weeks in a Catholic church, and the bridesmaids are all wearing black. I think the old rules just don’t apply anymore.

I think it’s appropriate, but just perhaps a little boring in the middle of a festive decoratate setting. I’d throw some color or some sparkle in there somewhere. Then again, I’m more of a ‘little purple dress’ than a ‘little black dress’ kind of gal.

I wore black to 4 of the 5 weddings I went to this year (someone pointed out to me recently that I own a lot of darker-colored clothes, haha)… I one I didn’t wear black to I was shocked to find how out of place I felt… everybody else was wearing it! I think it’s much much more acceptable than it used to be… go for it! :)

Guess I’m in the minority here, but I would never wear a black dress to a wedding if it weren’t a print or otherwise had some color in it. To me, it just looks like the person doesn’t know wedding etiquette. I’m sure most people don’t care, but there will a few who do (i guess it’s just me and the grandmas who will be tsk-tsking!).

I’m with celia! My mother is the antithesis of fashion (jeans and t-shirt every day) but she’s always told me never to wear black to a wedding. As did my very Southern (heels and pearls every day) grandmother. When two women in your life who are diametrically opposed to each other agree on something as simple as that, one has to acquiesce.

And more importantly, most of my day-to-day clothing is black, so I always feel more festive and more aware of the celebration when I have to consciously seek something with a little more punch!

worse than wearing black to a wedding is wearing white to a wedding.

If you’re close to the bride and you know she won’t mind go for it! But if you’re not sure it’s better to be safe than sorry.

I attended an outdoor afternoon wedding today, and it was surprising as to how many women chose black or a dark color. Even if we choose
to place tradition aside, the dark colors contrasted greatly with the pastels and distracted from the gaiety of the occasion.

Every woman has that “little black dress” in her closet. Choosing to wearing color shows consideration for the bride and the specialness of the day.

Back in the day, way back, black was considered a color of mourning.
No longer. It is a sophisticated look and you can add color with jewelry, scarves or shoes.

Many do NOT look good in pastels. My colors are royal blue, emerald green and black.

I would never wear RED to a wedding.
This is 2009 and if you care what others think of the color of your outfit I send you my sympathy!
