The Great China Debate

November 10th, 2006 @ 2:05 pm by Mrs. Raspberry

I’ve spent some time thinking about china. If anyone has any advice on the different types (bone, porcelain etc.) I welcome help!

I found a couple of patterns that I really love.

I really only love this one for the saucer - notice the little red ladybug on the leaf! And Anna Weatherley’s work is so beautiful!

This set I LOVE, but Mr. Raspberry thinks it is too girly…

We both like this, although I like the previous one better. The debate continues…

the first two are definitely more unique and eclectic… but my personal opinion is to go with the more simple and classy third.

remember you’re going to keep your china for decades, so you need to think about if you’re going to like the cutesy pattern when you’re, say, in your 50s. your taste is going to change over time…

… but if you LOVE the first, how about opt to get a few of the teacups/saucers and appetizer plates for when you have little parties with your ladies?

(translation: buy both!)

From least durable to most durable it is stoneware, earthenware, porcelain, and bone china. Yep, contrary to what most people think bone china is actually very durable and breakage resistant. Picking out china is so much fun even if the groom gets bored very fast. But my motto is you both have to live with it for years so you both gotta pick a pattern together. :p

I agree — buy a tea set that will coordinate with a more classic pattern.

And you know what — if you two aren’t set on any one pattern, don’t register for china. Wait until you find something you love. I know people say if you don’t ask for it now, you won’t ever get it. But it’s odd that the wedding industry asks couples to select everything they could ever need before they are even married. And if one of you isn’t sure you, you might hate it by the time you are married. By that time you will have a mess of incomplete placesettings and back where you started.

maybe you could just get the saucers (the ones with the ladybug:) and the teacups and just make that a tea set and not a full china set.

so what peachy set, just get part of both. :)

ahhh!! that’s my china pattern :) I bought about 1/3 of the collection already for myself - those little hand-painted old master tulip bread plates cost quite the pretty penny- $220 each! Hopefully some very generous people will buy the rest off my registry! :-p great choices! :)

I can tell you that the smartest thing I ever did was go with all-white china. It works for every occasion, and never goes out of style. You can change it up just whenever you want simply by changing table linens and serving dishes, etc.

You can also just...
