Reader Buzz: Gifts

November 11th, 2006 @ 2:18 pm by Reader Buzz

Mrs. Bee here.

Before Mr. Bee and I got married, we made a big deal out of exchanging birthday, anniversary and Christmas gifts. Now that we’re married, I prefer not to exchange gifts at all to save time and money. How unromantic! :P

But maybe for Christmas this year, we’ll set a budget of $25 for each other’s gifts because it’s the first year we won’t be getting a tree. And I love Christmas! :)

Do you have any policies when it comes to exchanging gifts with your significant other?

presents have sort of died out for me bf & i, too. we’d rather spend the $ on the actual day (bday, anni, etc.) than on presents.

i remember one year tho- we agreed to make each other gifts. it turned out to be very thoughtful and very cute.

Our budgets for each other have always been fairly small, due to income, but this year we’re setting a $25 limit too. We’ve got a move (hopefully) coming up within the next year, so all of our extra money is being saved for that.

We don’t really celebrate our dating anniversary…we recognize it (hey…happy 1 year!), but not much beyond that.

Since we got engaged we stopped buying expensive gifts so we can save for the wedding. I think that trend will continue since after we’re married they’ll still be lots to save for.

Funny, the hub’s birthday is tomorrow! I asked him what he wanted, and he said, “I don’t want anything. Every day is my birthday because I just use your credit card to buy whatever I want from the Internet!” So, no gift exchange for us. :)

during our first year, we had mini-celebrations for each month since i never been in a relationship that made it to a month so he did that for me. those gifts were usually small and sometimes we [usually me] make something. i’ve made me a scarf for one month and wrote a poem of the other. he went a lot bigger for our 1-year: he gave me a promise ring which totally trumped my mixed cd and a scrapbook with the lyrics of the songs on the cd.

we still give gifts though, but nothing extravagent since he’s still in school and we’d much rather save the money for our trips to visit each other.

With the wedding planning in full gear, we are probably not doing gifts or big gifts this year, and I too LOVE Christmas.

Shhhhhh…I listened to Christmas music yesterday. Seriously, I’m not telling anyone because I will be scorned in public… ;-)

Last year was the first year we put a cap on Christmas at $100. We both cheated and went over. haha This year, we made an absolute VOW not to go over. We used to go crazy at Christmas time!! We needed a cap.

Last year, we had just moved so we put a $50 cap on gifts, and stipulated that it couldn’t be stuff for the house. This year, I think we are putting a $20 or $30 cap plus buying each other our wedding rings. Yep, I totally feel old!
