My Fear: Being Healthy

November 13th, 2006 @ 8:35 pm by Mrs. Lemon

My friends joke about how I’ll need to stay “healthy” for the wedding, but in reality it’s my biggest fear. Not the cake melting, or my face breaking out… but literally being “ok” for the big day. I’ve battled with a chronic pain syndrome for the last ten years that leaves my body fatigued and tied up in knots, as well as causing migraines and a laundry list of other things. On days when I’m not feeling so hot, my mind quickly moves to my wedding month and all of the backup plans I’m going to need to have in place for my wedding day to go by smoothly.

So, in order to placate my fear, I’m planning out a relaxation schedule for the two weeks before the wedding hoping it wll prep me well. You see, I’ll also be graduating from school and moving in with Mr. Lemon during this time… oh the bliss! I’m thinking I should schedule some down time by chowing down on sushi, watching movies, getting accupuncture and taking care of wedding items in the company of friends at my favorite cafe with a big fat banana latte. And I’m going to stockpile my aromatherapy oils to trick my brain into believing that my body isn’t in pain and that all is well.

As for the big day… I’ll try not to drink any alcohol (except for some champagne) and take preventative medical steps if I start to feel any violent pain. I’m sure euphoria will take away some of the issues, but waking up the day after feeling like I was hit by a train won’t be good either. I’d better start writing out a list of things I’ll need in my honeymoon pack as well! :) I’ll buy a cute cosmetic bag for the stuff… that will at least make me smile when I need to use it!

Oh, Miss Lemon, I so hear you. I also have a chronic pain condition, and a chronic illness. (And I suffer from migraines.) Pain I can deal with–if I get a pain attack on my wedding day, I can take enough painkillers to deal with it. I might lose an hour or so, but it shouldn’t ruin the enitre day. Lots of brides are late for the ceremony. But I also get days where I’m so ill I can’t get out of bed, where if I as much as roll over I vomit. I’m terrified that I’ll be that ill on my wedding day. I will just have to be as careful as I can in the weeks beforehand. Luckily, these attacks don’t come on very often, or else I probably wouldn’t arrange an elaborate wedding day at all.

Good luck to you, Miss Lemon. I’m sure all the readers of Weddingbee will have their fingers crossed that you have a beautiful, healthy wedding.

I was worried about becoming sick too (my problems, IBS related, sound far less severe than yours though). On my wedding day, adrenaline took over and all was fine. I imagine the same will happen with you. My one suggestion: give yourself some time between the wedding day and your honeymoon. The two days *after* the wedding I had the horrible stomach ache that I was worried about getting on my wedding day. That made the honeymoon flight pretty painful. It’s a good idea to give your body sometime to recoop before you set off again.

Miss Lemon, while I don’t have the chronic pain, I suffer from migraines (ones so bad my arms go numb) and I also have a skin condiition that leaves me with red patches and welts. :( My mouth tends to get puffy and red, and the surrounding areas are itchy and blotchy. I’m afraid of that happening the day of. Good luck, Miss Lemon.

aww… thanks everyone! Today was one of those “bad days” so I had the topic on my mind… but I know I’ll be a trooper on the big day … I have to! :)

Fibromyalgia sufferer here, so I definitely feel your pain, no pun intended. Luckily my physical conditions weren’t exacerbated too much by my stress. I did my best to make sure I got enough sleep, and tried to eat well, and after that I just had to let things happen as they may. I did get hives, which I’ve never had before, and I also got a cold 2 weeks before the wedding. My aches and pains did increase, but with my medication it wasn’t much of a hinderance. So, good luck! It sounds like you’re on the right track, building in pockets of time to make sure you are taking care of yourself is a great idea.

I’m a fibro girl too, and stress does cause flare ups and bad days. The best thing I can tell you (and you probably already know) is to figure out what helps your aches and pains. Whether it’s destressing, taking some meds, or just getting a little bit of light exercise, figure that out now, that way you can put it into action before the big day. I was lucky that I did not feel much pain that day. By the end of the picture time, my back was really hurting, but by the time I got to the reception, there was too much going on to really notice it much at all.

Also be sure to tell those around you (FI, BP, MOH) about what your triggers may be. Like I said, mine pains can be largely contributed to stress, so I told my BP not to tell me if anything went wrong that I didn’t already know about. For example, two of our groomsmen got pulled over on the way to the church, and no one told me for about a week. Good choice! I didn’t need to know and the outcome of the day was not affected in any way!

Good luck, and I’m wishing you a day - pain free!
