We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

My Greatest Fear

November 13th, 2006 @ 11:32 am by Mrs. Kiwi

A lot of brides worry about sane things: will their photographer be available, will they lose enough weight to fit in the one-size-smaller than usual wedding dress, how will they cut down the guest list? I worry about these things, I do. My biggest fear though, is will we have enough people needed to get the ballroom of the venue we have booked?

To get the room, we need 150 people. At first, I thought, “Psssh. No problemo, that’s FI’s side alone.” Then we started going over the guest list and we are barely at 132! After hearing about 20% of your invites are “no”s, and some are no-shows, I’m afraid for us. I’m going to have to start going door to door to solicit friends! :D

Still compared to everything else, after the whole “having enough money for the reception,” this is my greatest worry.

What are your fears? Do you ever worry about this, or is it just me?

Right now? I think I’m worried about the guest count and reserving the right number of hotel rooms for people who need it. It used to be finding a DJ and photographer… but I just booked them heh.

I worry about this, too. Our minimum is also 150 people - and I’m worried about meeting it. Part of the worry is that so many people are from out of state and would have to travel to attend. I suspect our yield will be pretty low.

Second only to the cost and paying for everything, this is my biggest worry.

Hehe mine is exactly the opposite! We are going to be having the most guests of any wedding ever at our family house and I’m sooooo worried there just won’t be enough physical space for everyone!! I’m secretly hoping a lot of people won’t be able to come, but then I’m all noo but I do want them there! and then I get stressed about it again. That and money are our big ones.

i wondered about our guest list too. we invited a little over 200, but we were hopeful for 100, since we knew lots just couldn’t make it. so far we are at 95 positives. that’s good. i’m relaxed about that now.

How is it working for you all regarding invites? Are you inviting the maximum amount? Or if you’re like me, need 150 min, but can’t really afford more, are you just going to invite the 150, and THEN invite more?

i don’t think we could have made 150 either! we had about 96 people attend our wedding… and that was like everyone we knew. :)

Don’t worry, I worry about the same thing too!! We are contracted to have at least 150 ppl show up, and our ballroom is so big that I think to have less than that would make the space look, well, spacey! I stress out about it all the time… at least now I know I’m not crazy!

My fiance and I were worred about that too when we were planning a local wedding. A few venues said that we would have to pay for 150 regardless. But the best thing was that if we knew at least 1 week ahead we could use the difference to upgrade the food for the dinner or cocktail hour or more ice sculptures. You get the idea. Maybe they can do that if it comes down to it.

Jenny, that’s right, the amount to pay is the food/beverage minimum, so I guess that’s for 150 or less, as long as it’s the minimum amount we pay. Nice. Love to pay for non-existent guests. :) All this is making me freak out regarding out budget, too. I hate this side of wedding planning. :)

OMG! This is the exact problem that i have. Stupid us told our banquet manager that we were going to have 150 minimum before we actually sat down to discuss the guestlist. Our families don’t know that many people and alot of the guests are OOT so i don’t even know if we’re going to make 125! I don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing but the fiance knows alot of people so we’re going to have to invite all these people! Hopefully we will have at least the 150 minimum!

I definitely had the opposite fear to start with: that we would have TOO MANY people for our reception site. We booked a great little private dining facility that a friend of my mom’s owns, but we can only fit about 250 inside and an additional 30 on the adjoining patio. My FI has a HUGE family on his dad’s side, the result of many divorces and remarriages. Our initial list was over 350! We just went through the list this weekend and are down to just over 290, so we’re hoping we’re now good to go. I didn’t think 250-275 was such a big wedding, but after reading all these comments, now I do. Boy, my hand is going to be tired after writing all those thank yous!

I’m with Leslie!! My fiance’s family is about 110 and mine is about 90. So with friends, our guest list is around 375. Luckily, our venue holds about 400 people. Unfortunately, my parents are only paying for 300. So 75 people HAVE to say no! haha… But good luck with the 150! Just keep inviting :-)
