Nails

November 13th, 2006 @ 8:49 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

It’s confession time:

I abuse my fingernails. Currently, I have four long-ish nails, two that are broken, and the rest are raggedy and in-between. For someone who tries to take pride in many other aspects of my appearance, this should be disturbing to me. But it’s not. Between scrubbing floors, doing all manner of crafts, and my nail-picking habit, I’ve never been able to keep a decent-looking set. But without going to fake nails, I want my nails to look nice for the wedding. So starting today, I’m going to refrain from picking my nails, and try to be gentler on them when I’m doing my needlework and other miscellaneous crafts.

Not sure how I’ll want to wear my nails for the wedding. I’m thinking a french manicure would be pretty–I’ve had those a couple of times before but they never last long. But I’m also thinking a nice neutral or semi-nude color would look nice.

How are you wearing your nails for your wedding? Will this require any major change on your part?

I pick at mine all the time, and don’t see that stopping any time soon, unfortunately. :( I’ll probably just have them cut short and have a regular manicure w/ clear polish. FH and I aren’t planning on any close up ring shots, so we should be fine.

Oh, Miss Blueberry… my head is hanging in shame. I just bit all my nails down to the quick (why is it called a quick?), before I even had a chance to paint them pretty. :( I’ve been really good, since I got engaged I’ve only relapsed three times, each time biting them like helll. I used to be a MAJOR biter, but refrained before the engagement (I knew it was coming). Now, I’m planning on not biting them anymore (again. :) ) The day of I’m thinking a pale pinky-nude. Anyone have any recomendations?

I hate putting on fingernail polish because it requires sooo much maintenance plus I wash my hands 50 times a day so they paint washes off quicker and my hands tend to dry out. I’m not sure what I will do but definitely no french manicure and stick with some light pastel pink or white color just to make it not appear so unkept! =)

I’m not a big fan of french manicures, so for the last few months before the wedding, I tried all sorts of nude/light pink polishes. My faves included Essie’s Sugar Daddy, Steppin’ Out, Fiji, and Spaghetti Strap and OPI’s Altar Ego, Bubble Bath, Coney Island Cotton Candy, Cuddle By the Fire, Heart Throb, Hopelessly In Love, and Second Honeymoon.

Colors that didn’t work for me (and my Asian skin) included Essie’s Mademoiselle and Ballet Slippers.

I recommend getting manicures at least every other week to see what color works best for you. Colors that may work on some people may not be right for you. Soooo many peeps recommended Mademoiselle and Ballet Slippers, and they looked like ass on my fingers. :P

I too have a nail biting problem, have had it all my life. I’ve had artificial nails several times before and actually enjoy them. I really like how they look on my hands, so I will be getting them for the wedding. I’m not one of those people that only get them for a couple weeks, though. I’ll usually keep them for a few months and then I get them removed so my nails can recover.

OPI has an entire collection dedicated to weddings. Colors ranging from a very opalescent white to pale pale pink and all nudes inbetween.

I know a few girl who have had french manicures for their weddings and they say it never holds up. Unless there are acrylics involved I would stear clear from frenchies.

i have ‘working’ fingernails, even though i don’t work with my hands…got married this past sunday and my manicurist trimmed and filed to a nice even shortness and proceeded to do a sheer pink–essie ’sugar daddy’– they still look great!

For the wedding I will not be putting on acrylics, so whatever length my nails are is how they will be. Lol. I will be doing some sort of pale pink/nude colored polish.

I highly recommend Essie and the Ulta store brand. Key is matching the nude/blush/light pink to your skin tone. I’m Chinese and more tan than the “yellow” but peach of any shade does not work for me, it’ brings out the little bit of yellow undertone in my skin, awful! The best top coat ever is Essie’s Good To Go, it dries pretty quickly (just be patient) but once dried it’s rock solid and I can go a week without redoing my nails. The 7th day is when they start to peel or crack a bit (i’m also an obsessive hand washer).

No manicure for me either. I’ve always been good about keeping my nails in line, though. They normally break easily because with my job I do a LOT of hand washing, but lately they’ve been super strong. I really have no idea why. I’m thinking it might be my new lotion??

Day of I’ll be going for my usual pale pink nail polish (the only kind I ever use if I do paint my nails). I HEART OPI! That stuff is amazing. You can go to their website and use their “Try It On Studio” to look at the shades (it’s not super accurate, but it’ll give you an idea). Their Soft Shades Collection has the cutest wedding-related names. I’m a fan of Privacy Please. :-)

I think I’ll be going with a french manicure with Essie baby pinks(mademoiselle..sugar daddy…etc) and keep my nails relatively short, but somewhat of a rounded square ;)
