About Open Question

Hello Weddingbee!

I adore this site! I swear I’m going to get in trouble for going to it too often at work. But I digress….

I am a bride who has moved away from home, but still feels closest to those at home. And since my mom is paying for almost all of the wedding (both of us being recent college grads), we are getting married there.

Our dilemma is, we are getting married around a time where we are unsure if we can get and apply for a wedding license in my home state in time for the wedding. We both have finally become comfortable with the idea of getting legally married earlier if we must, but still celebrating our actual wedding.

Is this unusual? Has anyone heard of anything different? Is it that likely that the state might not be willing to work with us?

We are willing to hear any suggestions you may have on this! Yes, we’re disappointed we might not be able to be legally married on the day we’ve chosen, but we’re trying to find creative ideas to make it work.

Thanks!
Emily :D

you could always do a civil ceremony where you and your fiance live currently to make it legal a week or two before but still have the ceremony at home so you don’t have to worry about the legalities involved with getting married your home state.

my finace and i are actually considering that since with our busy work schedules we really aren’t sure if we will have the time to get licensed where we are getting married.

is it a time/distance issue? in my county, the licenses are valid for up to 3 months after the initial date your acquired it [or something like that]. you can check into the dates and if it’s broad like that, you can go in a little earlier to get your license.

what state do you want to get married in?

why can’t you apply in time?

i’ve not heard of that dilemma before, but i live in illinois, and you can pick up a marriage license any time - just walk in, pay the $$, and walk out.

I live in Arkansas, but I’m from New Jersey.

In NJ, after you apply, it takes a minimum of 72 hours to get your license. We’re getting married on December 30. So Christmas is on that Monday and I’m sure they’ll be closed. I get into town on the Saturday before Christmas, so I can’t do it before the holiday. So we have to hope and pray that they’ll be in on the Tuesday before and I can get the license in time without my fiance, who shows up the next day.

Dear Bees:

After reading Miss Hibiscus’s story about groom’s tux, I just realized that I also have a problem relating to groomswear and color coordination.

Appearantly, my dad went out and bought an expensive navy blue suit for my wedding as a surprise. He looked fabulous when he tried it on, but it’s NAVY BLUE!!! I don’t want him to look odd in our formal wedding picture when everyone else will presumably be wearing black, but I don’t have the heart to tell him not to wear the suit.

So, I am thinking about having everyone else rent navy blue tuxedos instead of black since no one has voiced a strong concern on the color yet. I went through some of the tux rental sites, and it appears that most, if not all, tuxes are BLACK?

I also found this gorgeous chocolate color tux, I mean, I love it. Do you think chocolate will look okay with my dad’s navy?

Thanks.

in cali the licenses are valid for up to 90 days. is there a time limit for new jersey? if it’s broad like mine is then maybe go in earlier and then just hold onto the license until your ceremony date?

Okay this is a crazy idea.. but!

According to the NJ website you can apply for a license up to 6 months before the wedding although the license itself is only valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.

http://www.state.nj.us/wedlic.html

If you go home at any point within the 6 month period you could always ask and see if you can apply and then see if someone else can pick it up mid December or if they can send the license to you via mail mid December.

I live in New Jersey and was living down with my parents in South Jersey, close to Philadelphia, while we were engaged. We moved into our new apartment two weeks before our wedding, our apartment is 15 minutes from New York City, and I was allowed to register for our license in the county where our apartment was so that I wouldn’t have to travel the 2 hours just to pick up the license. Hope this helps!
