Meet the Parents

November 14th, 2006 @ 4:47 pm by Mrs. Lemon

I had the pleasure of meeting my future father-in-law only a month into dating Mr. Lemon. He happened to be in town for a conference, and suddenly I was interacting with the fam without too much anticipation built into it. My b-day soon followed, so my parents were in town to celebrate and Mr. Lemon was scheduled to meet them at a nice dinner out on the town when my latest medical adventure struck. Instead of chatting under normal circumstances, he met them while making a hospital visit, but charmed them over in that gesture more than he ever could have at dinner.

Yet, the chance encounters of the parents took their final leap of fate when my dad came to help me move into a new apartment around Mr. Lemon’s b-day… so his family was out in California to visit. Well, trickery abounded and suddenly we were all enjoying Korean BBQ and chatting up in full family style (minus my mom of course).

Now all of this happened within the first six months of our relationship, which has seemed to make the wedding plans with both sides of the family much easier. There wasn’t too much pressure built into the meetings, and we each got the chance to make wonderful first impressions. In fact, our moms have been exchanging adorable little cards across the country with wedding details and praise for the new members of the family. (The interesting twist is that Mr. Lemon’s parents are both English professors, which is the most frightening school subject for my mom, so she drafts about 50 copies of each note before it goes out.)

My mom recently called to share the latest note from Pennsylvania and teared up when she read it… I’m so lucky to be gaining such wonderful new family members!

Do you think your relationships with new family members has helped/hurt the wedding planning process??

Your mom is so cute! =) I wish I had thought about arranging family gatherings way before the wedding planning. Def. takes the pressure off.

aww that’s is very cute.

honestly my in laws are not involved in my wedding planning at all. we’re having a very traditional “american” wedding where the brides side pays for most of it and honestly our parents have never met each other yet. i suppose that is strange… but… they don’t seem worried about it…

Awwww… It’s so nice to hear that your families got acquainted so comfortably. And your mother’s note redrafting is just adorable! I REALLY like the idea of meeting for the first time in a casual, unexpected way. My parents have yet to meet my boyfriend’s parents, and I’ve always kind of envisioned them meeting at a pre-arranged dinner or something similar… and after reading your story, I am going to avoid that kind of rigid first-meeting setting at all costs!

My parents made a trip with me this past September to meet my fiance’s family in Texas. It was really cute to see how nervous they were. No doubt they wanted to make a good impression but mainly it was for me (tear drop). They brought so much goodies for everyone because well I’m chinese and hospitality is our last name. The funny thing was my fiance’s family (who are mexican) were just as nervous. They cooked for us, had a barbeque and even made baskets for our hotel rooms. Needless to say everyone had a wonderful time. Most importantly 2 families i love so much seemed very pleased and happy.

i think its hard to fuse two families together(to some extent)..b/c they are indeed strangers that somewhat forced to become family…nonetheless i’m in the lucky boat since my in-laws are really awesome

We haven’t done the whole family introduction thing yet. I mean, my FI has met my family and vice versa, but our parents have not met each other, since they live 4+ hours apart. I’m curious to see if anyone has tips on how to do this!
