Open Question: Engagement Pictures

November 14th, 2006 @ 2:12 pm by Open Question

I have a question re: engagement pictures. We are supposed to take ours next month and I was wondering exactly how you take them.

For those of you who have already taken engagement pictures, did the photographer just take shots of you walking, holding hands, etc. or are those shots posed?

Thanks!

That’s exactly what she did. I suggest looking online (knot bios are great) for examples and ideas for epics that you like. I think close ups of the face & hands are great in addition to all the regular shots. A good bling shot is also nice to have. Have fun!

for us it was a bit of both. us doing our own thing & feeling comfy & some of her sorta guiding us.

my photographer was more instructional. he basically posed us most of the time, and then some candid ones between the posed ones. see my blog for the pictures.

Ours was a combination of both, but mostly posed. I wasn’t sure if I would like them, becasue I am a more candid type of person and I like photojournalistic photography, but we got a lot of nice portraits.

does everyone get engagement photos? I have never heard of them before. Are they for personal albums or do you give them to family as well? Please Advise!

Newlyengaged — You don’t have to get them, but they are nice. I think they are for personal use and also to give to family and friends. A lot of people use them on their invitations/save-the-dates and we used them on our wedding favors (CD’s). We also took our favorite and put a white matte (sp??) around it for people to sign at the reception. Our photography package included them and it was a lot of fun to take them.

Engagement pictures were included in our photographer’s packages - however we had already been announced in the paper (with a non professional pic) and I don’t really like the idea of ‘posed’ engagement pics so we asked if he could come to our engagement party & shoot some candid pics for a few hours..so that is what we negotiated.

My mom is a pro photographer, so she took our engagement photos. They were all posed, but we’ve got some great casual shots of us, including one for the papers. We also went back to the spot in the mountains of Nevada where we were engaged and took some of ourselves (I’ve got a pro quality medium format camera). They turned out to be my favorites. E-photos were included in our package with the photographer, but we’ve decided to turn that part into more money for prints.

Our photos started out posing us so that we could get comfortable in front of the cam. After that, the rest were pretty much candid because we were comfortable enough to be ourselves/pose ourselves for the camera. I just posted a few in my knottie bio (aldshoney) if you’d like to see.

A good photographer knows just what to do…we walked, sometimes he told us just to interact, he was aware of what looked natural and not, and he even asked FI to fix his shirt because it was bunching in an unflattering way. :-)

A couple times we were on a bench, walking, by a pond, in a garden…depends on your location and how your photog will use it, too. Point is, you photog should know the whole drill. Ask for suggestions about a location he/she is comfortable with.

all of the above. but the best pictures are when you’re really laughing and smiling for real. So say funny things and crack yourselves up. Even in a posed shot, the facial expression is what makes the picture.

as a photographer… i can say that engagement sessions are great fro several reasons…

1. you get comfortable in front of the camera.
2. you get to know your photographers.
3. you can get a frame to show at your ceremony/reception site (then keep forever)
3. you can get a signage frame for your guest to sign (i personally think it’s a GREAT replacement for your guestbooks)
4. you can get std, invitations, magnets, cd covers, etc. made before your wedding date
5. you get casual shot of the two of you.

we will do a mixture of posed and candid shots…

(jen did a great job explaining… just thought i’d put in my 2 cents)

Well it really depends on you and your photographer. I think we were completely lost in the scheme of things so we relied heavily on our photographers expertise in pose selection and whether it be close or far shots. The one thing I regret not doing was I wanted to remind him that my FI and I love scenic shots (no close ups) but he didn’t do much of that. I wished oh how I wished there were more pictures of the park and have us in the background somewhere holding hands (something cheesy like that). So once you book him make sure to jot down things you would like to do on the day of shoot. Good Luck!

I think e-pics can be a combination of both: those that your photographer suggests as well as specific shots that you would like the photog. to take. You can also specify that what you want, as well as the style, such as casual shots…you should check out the knottie bios that feature the most sought after e-pic shots!
