Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Don’t Go There Songs

November 15th, 2006 @ 3:50 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

We have a list of songs that are not allowed to be played at our wedding. I refuse to have any Metallica or hard rock songs -nothing head-banging. Mr. Kiwi refuses to have the Macarena which is okay by me, even though it is a catchy song. We are not having Shout or Celebrate because I refuse to do the little jump that always accompanies Shout (a la Animal House), and Celebrate just reminds me of all the Bat and Bar Mitzvahs in junior high, so that’s just something I’m sick of. No Chicken Dance or Limbo or other guest participation songs because I hate being the center of attention. FI also won’t let us play anything by Bette Midler, which I’m fine with, but I WILL have Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time or maybe someone else’s version of that song, like INOJ.

The list is still growing - hopefully we will have enough material left to dance to!

What are your “Don’t Play This” songs? And do you have any one song that you want played, other than the first dance?

“I knew I loved You” by Savage Garden. I always loved the lyrics….
“I knew I loved you before I met you…I think I dreamed you into life…”

We also had some Michael Buble songs…big band era type stuff he sings for cocktail hour.

I LOVE Michael Buble, ever since I saw him in this totally cheesy made-for-cable movie! He has a great voice, sounds very old school but in an updated way. :)

I just started putting together a playlist (our DJ has this nifty thing set up on the internet for us to choose music from their catalog) - my fiance requested “Mother” by Danzig! Ugh. Hopefully his brothers will see the humor in that. So much for an altogether classy affair.

I chose “Take On Me” by A-ha because on one of our first dates my fiance drank a little too much japanese beer and sang the song karaoke style. It was SO BAD, but it’s also such a hilarious memory.

My FI is against the Electric Slide or Cha-Cha Song, but I’m putting it in to get the crowd to dance. We had it at my sister’s wedding, and I didn’t it would be a huge hit w/ the Asian crowd. Boy, was I wrong. Pple had to dance off the dancefloor in order to move with everyone. I’ll be listing a mixture of Hip-Hop, Techno, and 90’s Pop. Is that an od mixture? If possible, during the reception, some Chinese songs for the guests while they eat.

On my Do Not Play List, “My Heart will Go On” “Total Eclipse of the Heart” Two of which I have heard play many times at weddngs. Goodness. I like Belinda Carisle, but I’m not sure if I want them to play her songs. And, Trance.

just a note: check with your DJ what s/he will say if someone requests a song you don’t want played. Our DJ simply said he didn’t have that song (nice). I’ve heard of some DJs saying, “Oh, the bride & groom don’t want Baby Got Back played” and then everyone runs over to the bride whining for the song. Not nice.

My do not play list, other than the classics you listed, are the booty-shakin ones like baby got back. We’re having a lunch reception, and I want it to be a fun party, but I still want it within my personal taste.

We still haven’t decided on our must-play list or first dance song. I’ve assigned the music to my FI, and I trust his judgement on it. But I still get veto rights, just in case he’s in a booty-shakin mood when he puts the list together.

Our wedding was an outdoor lunch reception. My do-not-plays include anything by Shania Twain, no jazz or blues (FI doesn’t like those genres). Must play Chasing Cars and Crazy. Anything else the DJ had free rein. Thank goodness I didn’t hear anything that had already been played to death at weddings (ie, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion etc etc)!

I found it useful to let the DJ know the kind of “mood” I was going for, ie, I love the ambience and the style of music at Starbucks cafe (or any other place in your locale, favorite restaurant etc etc- unless it’s some obscure place I find it helps a lot).

If I were to do it again I would buy the entire Grey’s Anatomy playlist and ask the DJ to play those songs. I love them!

I am veto-ing all Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. Those songs drive me insane.

I had a do not play list and they ALL got played! My husband and I left for a couple of pictures after dinner and when we came back our DJ played all the songs we hated for the kids. All the kids enjoyed dancing to them so I guess I shouldn’t complain.

I agree with milka that you should discuss w/DJ how to handle folks who specifically ask for songs on your do-not-play list. We were easy about it and told him it was okay if requested (like an electric slide), but you might not want that at all.

Our do-not-play also included Hokey-Pokey, YMCA, That’s Amore (so cheesy).

I have to agree with many of the above posts….no YMCA, no CEELLEEBRATTIION, no Conga Lines, no electric slide, no Love Shack….my list could go on. Do you think that means i’m going to have a boring wedding? HECK NO!! I can’t wait. Our music will consist of a little Beatles, some classics by Sinatra, and some Justin Timberlake. I can’t help it, I love his new stuff!

Other than our first dance song, Someone Like You, I have to have Vehicle by the Ides of March and Wrapped in You by Pat Green. I’m having trouble putting together a playlist, because a lot of my favorite music is indie and totally not danceable, unless you like to jump up and down. Do not plays include anything by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. It’s a month from the wedding and I still haven’t met with my DJ. My FMIL booked him…

when i first heard the song “at the beginning” from the Anastasia soundtrack, i knew i wanted it played at my wedding. I’m not sure where we will put it, but i like that it’s not over-used and it’s very sweet. we have had an on-going play list and do not play list. (we’ve been writing them down as we hear them.) thanks for the ideas of what to add to the do-not-play list. :) we will also being playing some michael buble as well as some josh groban, imogen heap… we want to keep it romantic and classy, but also have some unique music. we will mix in some old classics with the new stuff without adding the crowd participation songs and the over-played wedding music.

If you like Time After Time then you should check out the version by Eva Cassidy - it’s a perfectly sweet and slow version for a wedding.

On my do not play list…no “group dances” - the chicken dance, macarena, cha-cha song, the electric slide, hokey pokey…nothing that you must form a line or circle to dance to.

As for songs that I definitely want played, I’m not sure yet. Lol.

OMG thank you!
I am doing my final DJ list today!
He sent me a 90 page book of som=ngs to choose from and i scrapped and made my own list. From scratch. Color coded. I am a music snob beyond anything you may have ever seen.
You guys mentioned some things I forgot (Baby got Back, We are Family…Ugh!)
We are sticking to my taste in music thankfully. My fiancee is all about Brooks and Dunn and Garth Brooks, I had to say no, my family would kill me!
So we are having a mix of jazz and Sinatra, Michael Buble, Ella and Billie for the cocktail hour and dinner. For dancing, no participation dances!
We picked some fun dance music with the help of my friends-Beyonce, Gnarls Barkley, Grateful Dead (I am a crazy deadhead) etc…
I actually e-mailed my song list to my friends and bridal party and let them check it out and make suggestions-it was fun.
