Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!
About Mrs. Kiwi

Goodbye to Hoops

November 15th, 2006 @ 11:57 am by Mrs. Kiwi

When I turned 18 I got two things - a tattoo of a ladybug and a navel ring. Almost ten years later, I still love my tattoo and piercing. And while I have two holes in each ear, I usually wear one earring in the bottom holes only. While I couldn’t tell you why I got the belly button ring - other than because I could - I think it’s time to take it out. I’m a mild mannered bookkeeper, my tattoo is hidden from sight, my earrings are Mickey Mouse ears and the belly-button ring is hidden as well (and people all over Los Angeles are thanking me for hiding it!).

After seeing my cousin’s navel ring through her satin bridesmaid dress, I promised myself and future hubby that I would remove my ring before our wedding. A couple of nights ago, I decided what the hell and took it out. It’s not sexy on me anymore, and heck, even I don’t want to see my tubby ass with this piercing.

Still, as I lie awake that night, imagining the hole closing up for good, I panicked. My god, my ring is a security blanket! I need it to feel okay! I thought back to the times I actually notice my ring is there: the times it gets hooked on my jeans button (TOTALLY remember that it’s there when I’m screaming in pain) and when I’m nervous and I fiddle with it. This fiddling is almost like sucking my thumb. Because I have a barbell in there, I circle each bell with my finger (in a figure eight) and it calms me down. After having spent an hour that night talking about the new, piercing-free Miss Kiwi and how grown-up I was, I snuck out of bed and put the ring back in. The shame. The addict went back to her drug.

It was a few days before Mr. Kiwi realized the ring was back in. “What happened to the new Miss Kiwi?” When I told him that I’d take it out just in time for the wedding next year, he said “Fine.” but I saw that look in his eye. He doubts me! Of course, when the fiend goes back for her fix (ahhhh… figure eight) again and again, he has a right to be doubtful. Still, here’s to hoping next year I’ll be strong enough to take it out and leave it out. Hey, if not… there’s always right before our first child is born!

How about you? Is there anything you’re trying to give up before the marriage? Anything you need to have with you?

I’ve been going through the same thing! Thinking that I’ve out grown my belly ring and not wanting it to show through my dress on the big day. I was scared to take mine out though. Was it hard to get out?

Hehe well it doesn’t matter if the HOLE is still there when you get married right? Just take it out that morning if you’re having trouble letting go!

And I totally know what you mean about little fidgety security blankets. I’m gonna lose it if I ever get a watch with a less-fun-to-play-with type of clasp!!!

I still have my baby blanket (the shame!) and my FI would love for me to get rid of it but it’s not going to happen. Whats wrong with a comfort object? It’s not hurting anyone!

S- it was really easy to take out. TOO easy!! I put it back in. It’s in now. SO sad, right? I take it out all the time, what kind of ring do you have? barbell or hoop? For me, the barbell is way easier to take out, because I had such a hard time closing the hoop, I keep losing the little closing ball thing.

Lol Miss Kiwi I have several reactions to this post:

1)My married name is going to be “Hoops” (no kidding). so I thought…omg! It scared me for a minute

2)I am removing all superfluous piercings the day of the wedding and happily putting them back in the day after–my nose stud, cartiledge piercings (3 of ‘em), and belly button ring. I’m deliberately holding off on the tattoos until after I’m married, so I don’t have to worry about covering it ;-)

I am sooo glad to hear I’m not the only one holding on to things! Okay, wanna hear about the saddest thing I held on to? I have this stick, yes, a real stick, that Mr. Kiwi and I found at the beach a few years ago, perfect size, nice and smooth… So we brought it home with some shells. And I brought him to my old place. And then I brought him when Mr. Kiwi and I moved in together. And now, stick has his place sitting in my x-mas stocking (up year round). And yes, his name is stick, and the dog isn’t allowed to touch him. Sad? You betcha. He’s useful for many things, turning off the light, poking Mr. Kiwi when I need something, scratching my back, picking things up off the floor. Sadly, this is totally serious, and he will probably come with us whereever we go. My parents even know about it and call him “Stick.” I really need a new habit, like smoking or gambling. :D

At this point I just see navel piercings as something akin to ear piercings. They’re pretty commonplace and just there…as such I don’t feel the need to really take mine out as part of some feeling of growing up.

I did take out a piercing years ago that I really had loved, and it closed up before I could put the ring back in, and I’ve really regretted not having it on occasion. I say if you love it you should keep it, and if it bothers you at the wedding just take it out for that moment.

Thanks tea! Poor Mister Stick (his given name) is a total crutch (no pun intended), but I love him. And this is so gross… he even has some teeth marks. From me. (Hangs head in shame) Mr. Kiwi thinks it’s hilarious, but we washed him off really well (salt water reaaaally hangs on), and now Stick is covered in teeth marks and one little puncture where Woofie tried to snatch him and run. Which is why he’s no longer allowed to play with Stick. *sigh* I need a new hobby.

LOL You totally reminded me of when I had my baby! I needed a c~section and I was already prepd in a wheelchair in the halway while the nurses put on those paper scrubs and they gave me one last check before entering the room…. They made me remove my tounge ring! I had it for years and sadly a few days later after all the excitement I remembered but it was too late. It had already closed ^_^

Miss Blueberry,
Have you taken your nose stud out before and put it back in?
My daughter got a nose stud while she was a free-spirit NYC accountant. When she returned home to teach school in “Itty-Bitty Small Town”, Louisiana she was asked (told) to remove it. She took it out at school and tried to put it back in that same afternoon but the hole had almost totally closed and she could never get it back in. She’s still mourning the loss.

The FI has hounded, asked, begged, dealed, and given me an ultimatum to give up artificial sweetners. While I know that they PROBABALY aren’t that great for me, (please don’t tell him I said this) I just can’t give up Splenda, Diet Coke, Sugar-Free Candy, etc…I won’t. It’s the one piece of singleness I’m holding onto. :)

JJrames, I LOVE sugar free candy. Like, hard candy. It’s like when I got hooked on those old school n’ice cough drops that weren’t really cough drops, but that that icy cool feeling! YUM. I haven’t had those in years, but I wonder if they’re still like that?

clear nose studs are amazing…when I wear mine, my friends actually think I’ve let the hole close! any piercer should have them.

Miss Bluberry: I forgot to mention: Sorry! Not goodbye to you! ACTUALLY, the song in my head was “Goodbye to you- goodbye to you-ou, good bye to you!” Even though I still like my ring, I think I’m getting too old for it in my personal life. After the year of married life, we’re going to try for kids, and I think after that, it’s done. Either way, I may just take it out the day of, or I will take it out permanently before that. I have no idea. :(

Can I ask where your ladybug tattoo is located, if you want to ask? I want to get one (around the size of a penny) and put it behind my ear, but I’m not sure if I can handle that amount of pain and I have to find a tattoo parlor that does tattos on the head. Thanks!!

Julia, my tattoo is about the size of a quarter/silver dollar, and it’s located on the fatty spot right on the back of my hip. So there was a little bit of pain, but from what I’ve heard, it hurts SO much more on a spot directly over the bone (ankle, spine, foot, head?). Behind your ear?? Youch. :) Good luck! Do you have a design in mind? I got mine off a t-shirt. :)

Marilyn–Yes, I’ve taken it out before–for job interviews, stuff like that. I’ve had it pierced for over a year now. But I wouldn’t want to take it out any longer than I have to. There are also clear retainers available, but I have used one of those before and it still showed a bit.

I have my bellybutton done and my right rook (ear). I love them both and they are part of who I am. I will not take either of them out for my wedding (in years). I love them.
I’m considering getting angel wings tattooed on my back (whole back) but want to wait until after I’m married because I dont want partial wings sticking out of my dress.

I drew mine…it’s just a tiny little ladybug. It will be all red and no fill-in, just outline with 3 dots on each “wing” or whatever you want to call it. It will also have two little antenni with little dots on the end. I happen to love the ladybug for “Miss Ladybug” on here, so I might use that as inspiration! :)

I’ve heard it will hurt a LOT, but I love my spot because it’s creative. No one has tattoos there and if my hair is down, you can’t see it (so I can be professional, yanno?).

Thanks for your answer!!
