Open Question: Tagless Gift

November 16th, 2006 @ 3:00 pm by Open Question

Hi Bee,

I started reading your blog a long time ago while it was still on xanga, and finally I got married about two weeks ago. I have a question for you or the weddingbee readers. We received a gift at our wedding with no card or tag on it. We have used a proccess of elimination to narrow down who gave us gifts and who didn’t, but there are several people this mystery gift could be from. How do we go about figuring out who gave us this, without putting a person who didn’t give us a gift on the spot?

Thank you in advance!
Jen

I recently had this problem at a birthday (all presents were seprated from their tags) so i just wrote very very generic thank you cards. That is what you gotta do. Even if you are just “thanking you for sharing our special day love Mr and Mrs blank”. Then no one gets embarrassed and those who did not give you a gift will not think getting a thank you is weird.

I agree with Lucy. I recently read in the etiquette book that my FMIL gave me that you should send a thank-you card to everybody who attended your wedding whether or not you received a gift from them. The book says that if your card doesn’t mention a specific gift, the giver might be prompted to say something to you about it which will clue you in on who gave the mystery gift. I once attended a wedding and gave the couple cash in a card (which may have been lost) and never received a thank you card. I was pretty upset about it, so I would cover your bases.

if it was shipped take a look at the return address. each post office has a specific code in the cancellation stamp.

You think that’s bad? We got a gift with another couples name on the card. Turns out they’d had the wedding space on the floor above us and the guests didn’t take the gift after they realized their mistake. After three calls to the reception location, no one will return the call so we’ve still got the gift!
