I’m not exactly a morning person, but one thing seems to make me wake-up for the day: Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” It’s Mr. Lemon’s ringtone and almost every morning I get to chat with him for 10-30 minutes (silly LA traffic) as he makes his way to work. Our chats aren’t special in topic, but they’re incredibly crucial to our relationship. We get to make each other laugh, talk in silly voices about silly things and bring up any planned events or fears about the day with each other. It’s also helped us dissipate possible fights, as we honestly talk out what’s bugging us or what we may have misinterpreted in each other’s actions.
We don’t email or chat during the workday, but like clockwork I hear that song sometime after 6:30 for our evening chat. It doesn’t matter if we’ve seen each other minutes before the call in the morning, or if we’re about to see each other minutes after we hang up at night. If I miss the chat, I feel anxious to share out to him, and it’s then that I realize how wonderful it is to have a set amount of time each day to do that as does he.
I often wonder about what will happen when our lives and routines change in a few months, but I know that I want to hold onto some sort of similar pattern of communication since it has been such an important part of our relationship.
How do you set aside time to openly talk with your significant other?
