The Perfect Toast?

November 17th, 2006 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

While browsing via StumbleUpon recently, I came across this site and wanted to get y’all’s reaction to it:

The Perfect Toast

Basically, the site’s premise is that for $39-$155, you can have someone else write and coach you on delivering a wedding toast. This seems sorta shady to me…it’s rather akin to those essay-writing sites that so many high school and college students use. Plus, those delivering the toasts are usually good friends or close relatives of the bride and groom–they should hopefully be able to come up with something to say on their own, without paying someone else to do so. I understand that not everyone is a show-stopping speechwriter, but I always thought that was part of the charm of a toast: heartfelt, very sincere, yet not always expertly executed or written.

What do you think? Would you use this service? How would you feel if someone used it to speak at your wedding?

My brother was recently best man at our childhood friends wedding. I have to say his was the most unique toast I have ever seen. It was a mad lib. Each table had a numbered card and the table would insert the noun, adjective, etc, when the table number was called.

I believe my favorite was ” Chris and I met through our mutual interest in (plural noun)”

Bull whips was called out from the table.

Katie, that’s so cool! I’ll have to remember that if I ever need to deliver a wedding speech.

If I did that someday, does that mean I’ve cheated?

I don’t think I would be upset because I sincerely doubt the person delivering the speech would be wearing a sign that says “I paid someone to write this for me!” - so I doubt I’d know anyway. This is a wedding, not the SAT or Bar Exam! It’s not going to be published on the front page of the New York Times.

In short, it wouldn’t bother me.

having been to a wedding with a painful (not just awkward) best man speech, i would definitely be ok with someone paying for a little editing help.

Hehe. I guess it really depends on the person giving the toast… some people honestly are sincere, but lack the means to put their feelings into words. So maybe a service like the above could help them in a positive way; give ‘em a helping hand and ease their worries. That said, though, I’d feel weird if someone who had full capability of coming up with their own used a service because they were lazy, and the speech was completely generic.
