A Long Distance Bride

November 20th, 2006 @ 9:29 am by Mrs. Apple

Miss Plumeria’s blog on her MOH inspired me to blog about friendships. Not only am I a bride, but I’m also a maid of honor. One of my very good friends is getting married in Germany next year and I’ll be standing right beside her to see her smiling from cheek to cheek.

I was just thinking about her the other day, and it never really occured to me until then that I haven’t been the best MOH that I know I can be! I know that being asked to be someone’s MOH is a wonderful privilege. But I’ve been so busy with my own schedule that I haven’t had any time to devote to her wedding. I guess partly she hasn’t had time either since her first priority is to finish up her last semester of Dental School at the University of Michigan so her wedding falls a close second. Plus, she will be getting married in Germany and her fiance’s parents are taking care of all of the wedding vendors and planning since that is where they reside.

I really try to be as active as I can but it’s difficult since she’s so far. We can’t just pick up the phone and go wedding dress shopping or go to Borders and check out the latest edition of Inside Weddings magazine (my personal fav). I would love to just spend quality time and do those fun activities with her because I know she would love it as much as me!

But when we do have extra time, we always call one another (at least once every 2 weeks) and catch up with our wedding updates. There was one time when she called me from Borders in Michigan and I went to Borders in Dallas to pick up the latest edition of Inside Weddings so we could pick our favorite wedding dresses for the new season. We skimmed every single page of that magazine and were on the phone for 3 hours!

This got me to thinking - I would like to send her a useful and practical gift. One that she will actually use and not store away in her closet. For some strange reason, even though I am a bride I’m drawing a blank on this answer. Does anyone have any suggestions on long distance wedding planning gifts for brides? What would you brides to be love to get from your MOH?

You know, I never thought about that… that’s a tough one. Nancy’s comment above might work, or for a gift that would last past the wedding, maybe a subscription to Real Simple or something. How about a relaxation spa kit? :)

When my friends got married last year, I sent them a gift certificate for a personal assistant (I think it worked out to about 3-4 hours of time). Sometimes I would love to have a p.a. just to run errands (address envelopes? organize something?) and I thought the gift of time would be the best as I didn’t want to clutter up their home prior to their move (they moved and married around the same time frame).
