Open Question: Winter Themes

November 20th, 2006 @ 1:29 pm by Open Question

Hi Bees!

Great site, definitely my favorite wedding blog!

I need your advice as I seem to be hitting a wall for inspiration ideas. We’re planning a winter wedding on the other side of the globe - June 2007 - with a white/ivory and evergreen palette. I’m thinking Winter Solstice, deep green tones, and a warmish white (not diamond white, I mean).

Seems easy enough? But the challenge is to find cool wintry ideas that don’t involve snow (which isn’t a feature here) or Christmas/Pagan Solstice (especially since this is a religious wedding, and a Christmas-in-June theme is NOT going to fly). Similarly I’m just trying to get a mood board here, but I keep coming up with sage or lime green themes. Or brown, which is not a color I want to incorporate too much.

Any links or galleries or bios that you’re familiar with that incorporate our theme? It would be such a great help!

Greetings from Cape Town!

C.

Well, you don’t have to stick to “winter” ideas; if you have color palette you want, you can just go with that. However, here are some ideas:

1) Bare branches used in centerpieces/pew decorations
2) Winter fruits such as berries and pomegranates (or whatever winter fruits are in your part of the Southern Hemisphere)
3) A venue with a fireplace!
4) Favors like hot chocolate or spiced cider

I like the colors shown in these fabrics. The cream, dark green, and pale tan go well together, but the natural coor is light enough to not be brown:

I was thinking the same thing about branches, especially evergreen branches with pine cones…which to me is more winter than fall. A friend of mine did mini evergreen trees as centerpieces for her winter wedding. Her colors were periwinkle, black and silver and there was almost no snow. ;-)

I like the berries idea, too, which might start to bring in red, though.

omg what happened to my comment? weddingbee ate it!

- tree brances with tealights hanging in them. or white pomanders on green ribbons + crystal beaded strands hanging in the brances.

- lots and lots of candles everywhere! just on their own, in hurricanes, laterns, silver or glass pillar sticks.

- bayleaf garlands (green + wintery + not TOO christmas-y)

- ivory table cloths w/emerald green satin runners.

check out potterybarn.com, westelm.com and crateandbarrel.com for winter/holiday deco ideas! you can easily incorporate the ones that fit your ideas into your wedding!

My suggestions are amaryllis, poinsettas, crystals, pine trees, and hypernicum berries, in any of the many colors they come in. Rosemary trees are also very pretty and smell awesome. Good luck!
