Heavenly Habits

November 22nd, 2006 @ 12:18 am by Mrs. Spider

I just smoked a cigarette. In the kitchen with the windows open. And the exhaust. While surfing ebay on my laptop balanced on top of the stove. Sounds kinda pathetic right? WRONG! It was heaven. HEAVEN, I’m in HEAVEN and my heart beats so that I can barely speak…

My parents don’t know I smoke. Wait, my mom does cuz I told her but my dad doesn’t know. He also doesn’t read blogs so I’m good haha.

When we got engaged, I promised Mr. Spider I would quit after the wedding. I didn’t smoke a single solitary cigarette on our entire honeymoon despite there being ashtrays around the pool and the beach. What’s better than a smoking a cigarette while sipping on a mango mojito on the friggin beach? A healthy long life? Oh healthy schmealthy.

I bought a pack within days of returning home. Yes, I am a smoker. I don’t look like one, I know. Mr. Spider used to smoke too but quit when he starting biking, oh no, he calls it “cycling.” He bought me a bike too but all I ever wanted to do was smoke while riding. Ok that makes me sound like some crazy chain smoking biker chick. The truth is I smoke anywhere from 0 to 5 cigarettes a day. Zero being the days when I’m too lazy to leave my office and go downstairs and 5 being the days I actually go out with friends who smoke.

It’s a terrible habit, I know. Truly disgusting if you think about it. When it gets really smokey during a BBQ, I don’t inhale deeply and think YUMM - I wave my hands back and forth in front of my face, squint my eyes and say things like OMG, my clothes are gonna reek of smoke. When I walk down the street behind someone smoking, I don’t clap my hands and sing, I dodge the smoke matrix style and make a sour face. When I get into a car that’s infused with smoke and crop dusted with ash, I don’t think the driver is one cool dude - I cough dramatically and lay something down to sit on. Why is it then, so hard for me to quit a habit I clearly find offensive in other people?

Put simply, smoking is my bad habit. I promised I would quit once I got married. That has since become a promise to quit when I start the process of having a baby. Mr. Spider doesn’t want children for another five years. That’s a lot of cigarettes between now and then.

Do you have any “I promise I’ll stop _______ once we’re married” habits?

I promise I’ll stop spending so much money once we’re married. That was a goal for myself at one point cause I wanted to save enough get a home together in the future. So far I’ve been pretty good ,I hardly shop now ever since my baby was born.

Anyway I hope you will stop smoking in the future. If you ever have the time you should google an image of smoking lungs. Not so pretty what your inside of your lungs looks like.

Nony Mouse

I have a friend who stopped smoking only after it was contraindicated by reconstructive surgery following a nasty accident. And they still miss it. I asked why and was told, “Because I liked smoking.” But they like having everything attached more, so there you go.

the only way people quit is when they are really, truly ready to quit. you have to really want to quit in your heart or what everyone says goes in one ear and out the other.

well, if it means anything, some things to consider:

1) if you are planning on having a baby, being in good shape for the whole process is not a bad thing. we all know a women should never smoke while she is pregnant.

however, have you thought about the effects of smoking while you are trying to get pregnant? a smoker can increase chances of infertility, a premature/low weight baby, and there’s a plethora of increased risk for diseases for the baby if you are a smoker initially, even if you do quit during the pregnancy.

2) “live fast die young” - what teenager doesn’t abide by that cliche of a rule? however, life really is too short to purposely try and kill yourself. people shrug off cancer as this foreign disease that happens to “other people”. but seriously, cancer is no joke. i’ve lost a parent to cancer and you don’t realize how vile, terrible, and heartwrenchingly painful it is to lose a loved one to this terrible illness. what’s even worse is my mother was the healthiest woman i’ve ever known, and yet cancer took her away from me and my family.

it’s not worth increasing your risk of getting cancer or any other deadly condition - you end up not only hurting yourself but potentially hurting the people that love & care about you, too…

good luck.

My worst habit is bringing work home with me. Sean and I talked about it and decided that it’s my goal, prior to the wedding date, to learn to relax. Not go on vacation and call the office for my messages, wander around checking email on my crackberry, and watching stock tickers instead of actually BEING on vacation.

I say this, because I start a two week vacation, and have already set up my away message, forwarding all email to my home email…is that so wrong?

I stopped smoking about two years ago, back then more for my then boyfriend (now FI) than for myself.
I started again after a crisis about 1 1/2 years. Strangely enough my FI really hated it then. I wasn’t allowed to smoke in the house and he would really dislike it if I smoked at all around him.
I also noticed that it really affected my health. I got sick all the time and it lasted a lot longer. For health/financial and relationship-reasons I stopped again over a year ago.
I have smoked the odd cigarette but I don’t feel at all like ever starting again.

Why not stop completely, since you only smoke a few a day anyway? Or at least only socially smoke but never during the day.

It’s hard to stop smoking because smoking is addictive. It takes a great deal of discipline and willpower to overcome it, but I know that when you’re ready, you’ll be able to do it!

what’s more important?

having a cigarette or your happily ever after husband?

think about it. you’re supposed to grow old together. how sad for your hubby if you got sick and died early only to leave him alone and heartbroken without his love?

i quit recently too and this is the talk my fiance had with me. it really opened my eyes!

I smoke as a bad habit too, but usually, I smoke when I drink. I always tell myself I’m going to stop and I really never do. I’ll admit though I did stop buying packs and when I do smoke I just end up bumming one. But since I stopped buying packs, I think I smoke 2-4 cigarettes a month. (depending if I’m drinking) Well anyway, I just wanted to share my story :) Good luck!

Ah, I hear you. I was in the exact same mindspace while attempting to quit. I was trying to quit for the sake of quitting, not because I really wanted to. I think I “quit” then started up again a month or two later at least a half-dozen times. I loved smoking. It took my now-boyfriends to be my strength to quit, and it’s been about eight months since my last cigarette. Good luck, Mrs. Spider; I’m rooting for you to be able to find that motivation to bite the bullet and do it once and for all!

I smoked between 14 years old to 28 years. I smoked a pack a day and I stopped cause one day I got bored. I got bored and I didn’t want to smoke anymore. I bought Allen Carrs bok, and it helped me stop. It uses Neurolingistic programing to help you stop, basicly by continous repetition the book get’s alters your subconcious idea that you miss it when you are not smoking to the idea that you happy do you don’t HAVE to smoke.

The concept is always, you no longer Have to do this, You no longer have to hurt your lungs, or wake up with a cought etc etc…When you feel that YOU want to quit, then get that book and it will help you.

My mom smoked for 10 years and said what did the trick for her was to stereotype and picture some fat Old-South style white guys in Tennessee sitting on a porch getting rich off her health.
