The $25 Limit Christmas Gift

November 22nd, 2006 @ 10:50 am by Mrs. Violet

I’m tagging onto Miss Kiwi’s previous post Season of Giving. I received the best gift ever last year. Mr. Violet and I had “promised” each other not to exchange gifts last year so that we could save money. I wasn’t expecting anything until he pulled out a box for me. The box was very light. I opened it to find a purple collar in there.

Knowing how much I love dogs and have always wanted one, you’d think that I was super thrilled. Instead, I was mad. We had always talked about getting a dog, but agreed to wait until we could afford the expenses of owning a dog. So when he pulled out a collar, I thought it was a bad idea. But then we started visiting North Shore and seeing all those cute puppies changed my mind. We adopted Sammantha (nickname: Sam) on New Year’s Eve.

This year we’ve decided that we are going to have a $25 limit policy. It’s actually much harder than you’d expect. It has to be thoughtful yet inexpensive. Since I’m crafty, I can always make him something and call it a day, but I’ve made him a lot of things already (a mosaic frame, scrapbook pages, polymer clay animals, knitted a scarf, cards, etc.) So now I’ve decided to buy him one or a few thoughtful gifts that are under budget. He’s a computer geek, loves gadgets and baseball, so everything he likes is expensive! Any ideas? This will definitely be a challenge.

Are you setting a Christmas budget or are you going all out?

Your dog is so cute!! My boyfriend and I got each other huge gifts a while back because we both graduated and it was also our 4 year anniversary. He also got me a dog, while I got him a PSP. Ever since then, we’ll be on a gift budget!

Even though we’re saving up for a wedding, we still go all out on holidays, especially Christmas! I honestly wouldn’t care about receiving only a small gift but it would be nearly impossible for me to seriously restrict how much I spent on his gifts.

i LOVE think geek! it’s such a great site. i wish they still had those super mario “one up mushrooms.” we don’t have a limit to set, though we don’t typically go too extravagent since we like to save our precious pennies towards airplane tickets and stuff for visits. i’m still in the process of figuring out what to get him though…he’s a tough cookie to shop for

in terms of prices for gifts, we don’t really have a set min/max limit but i know that’ll change once we’re married!

. . . well, ThinkGeek has already been mentioned, but not http://www.woot.com. It’s kind of a gamble as to whether they’ll have something awesome or not, since they usually only sell one thing per day. What has my FI gotten me that I enjoyed? 1) my own USB controller (though most aren’t that well-made), 2) some issues of Wired magazine, 3) World of Warcraft (probably > $25). Does he have any favorite video/computer games?

Thanks for all the great comments!! I really appreciate it. Mrs. Bee posted the glass paperweight idea from roomservice which I think would be cool. I can put a picture of my dog and myself for him to use at work. But, I’ll definitely check out all the websites suggested!!!
