About Mrs. Blueberry

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

November 23rd, 2006 @ 12:26 pm by Mrs. Blueberry

Now get off your computers and enjoy some quality time with your family :).

I’m at Mr. Blueberry’s right now; his aunt and cousin are visiting and more relatives will be showing up for dinner in a few hours. I’m contributing a cheese ball appetizer, green bean casserole, and pumpkin cookies.

What are you contributing to your family’s Thanksgiving? Share your recipes!

Here’s a link to the cheese ball I made :). Muy delicioso!

I made:

Texas sheet cake (I used a recipe out of one of my mom’s cookbooks. this link is closest to the recipe I used, minus the pecans).

Spicy Chickpea Snack Mix (for those that really can’t wait until dinner has been served-YUMMY!).

And Cheesy Manchego Mashed Potatoes! I’m so excited for these, and I cannot WAIT to try them!

Since I’m only a freshman in college, I’m just helping Mom out with dinner. I’ve always said, however, that if I wasn’t in my current programs (architecture and interior design), I would want to be a chef!

or wedding planner. ;)

I used to just help out mom here and there, but this year - now that we’re all grown up and married and stuff - I actually brought multiple dishes to her house. I baked three loaves of homemade bread and two key lime pies; one for my husband and father to split, and the other one we took to my inlaw’s house.

A new tradition that started when my husband and I were dating is perogies. He told me that first thanksgiving (we’d been dating for two months at that point) that he’d love me forever if I made him perogies. These take about 3 hours, but they’re very good:

Of course, I make them once and now I have to keep on doing it. :) But my family likes them, too.

My family are my friends here at grad school. So I hauled my butt out of bed early and cooked a 23lb turkey and then made gravy with the drippings. I love those chickpeas you made Kiley.

my in-laws actually invited my whole family to Thanksgiving dinner at their place this year so that was nice. The hubby and I were told to not bring a thing, just a health appetite which we happily obliged. :)

I made sweet potato casserole, a family tradition.

5 small or 2 large cans of cut sweet potatoes/yams, drained and syrup reserved
1 cup light brown sugar
3 tablespoons butter
1 large bag large marshmallows

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put cut potatoes/yams in a 9×13 baking dish and mash. Add brown sugar and butter. Mash again. Add reserved syrup 2-3 tablespoons at a time, mixing until you get to a soft consistency (this step is hard to describe, you just know when it’s right). Smooth out potatoes/yams mixture in dish and cover with marshmallows. Bake for 45 minutes or until marshmallows are puffed and brown on top.

I bring Irish Soda Bread to every family holiday event. My great aunt made the most delicious soda bread in the world, when she passed away, I knew someone had to start - the holidays wouldn’t feel right without it!
