Well, another Thanksgiving has come and gone, this time spent with Mr. Kiwi’s side of the family. Since I had never been to one of their turkey day festivities, I was pleasantly surprised to see there were more than one side dish that was vegetarian; in fact, other than the stuffing, all the sides were veggie! So that was good, but it was still sad for me because when I saw they had yams with marshmallows, it reminded me of my grandma’s version - one that hadn’t been made since she passed away ten years ago.

While there was an accident (FMIL cut the bejesus out of her finger), my stuffing wasn’t up to my standards (too dry), and the desserts left something to be desired, it was nice to see a kid’s table again. At my side’s Thanksgivings, there are two children - not enough to warrant a kid’s table yet. Being around the children yesterday, made my baby-brain surge again. Until talk steered towards our wedding!

So, while the day wasn’t as sad and disappointing as I had thought it would be, I still missed my dad’s side. And when my cousin Karen sent me an email with the p.s. reading, “I’ll miss you.” I admit, I cried a little. I’m a sap. Still, no matter what: My side gets dibs on Christmas day!

glad you enjoyed yourself this with his side of the family. does anyone in your family know you’re grandmother’s yams recipe? that could be something you can restart again for future thanksgivings

Yams with marshmallows is not vegetarian… conventional marshmallows are made with gelatin, made from animal skins, bones, etc.

Hey Seattle, yeah, I already knew that. Been a vegetarian since birth, so I didn’t say I had eaten the yams, just that it reminded me of my grandma. No one in my family really ate her yams, either, but it was nice to see it. When I said veggie sides, I meant the potatoes, greenbeans, rice, and mushroom thingy. Those were very tasty!

Tea, I think my Dad’s side wouldn’t make the recipe because no one eats yams! :) Or is it a sweet potato? Crap.

heyjanety, no matter how much I love the future in-laws, I still can’t help but think about what my family was doing that exact same minute. It’s a hard habit to break, right??

Anyway, hope you all had great vegetarian, lacto-ovo vegetarian, vegan, carnivoristic (word?), herbivoristic (there I go again) and omnivorey Thanksgivings!
