Well, another Thanksgiving has come and gone, this time spent with Mr. Kiwi’s side of the family. Since I had never been to one of their turkey day festivities, I was pleasantly surprised to see there were more than one side dish that was vegetarian; in fact, other than the stuffing, all the sides were veggie! So that was good, but it was still sad for me because when I saw they had yams with marshmallows, it reminded me of my grandma’s version - one that hadn’t been made since she passed away ten years ago.
While there was an accident (FMIL cut the bejesus out of her finger), my stuffing wasn’t up to my standards (too dry), and the desserts left something to be desired, it was nice to see a kid’s table again. At my side’s Thanksgivings, there are two children - not enough to warrant a kid’s table yet. Being around the children yesterday, made my baby-brain surge again. Until talk steered towards our wedding!
So, while the day wasn’t as sad and disappointing as I had thought it would be, I still missed my dad’s side. And when my cousin Karen sent me an email with the p.s. reading, “I’ll miss you.” I admit, I cried a little. I’m a sap. Still, no matter what: My side gets dibs on Christmas day!
