Father-Daughter Dance Songs

November 25th, 2006 @ 4:29 am by Mrs. Raspberry

When I was talking to my mom about Father-Daughter dance songs recently, she mentioned that Brown Eyed Girl (which I really wanted to use) is her song with my dad.

For a long time (even before I got engaged), I always said I would want to dance with my daddy to Bette Midler’s “The Wind Beneath My Wings.” I still love the song and think it would be a wonderful choice, but something really struck my heart. When I heard Tim McGraw’s “My Little Girl” on the radio for the first time, I cried. And I knew I had to use that song.

When I was a baby, my father used to dance around the house with me in his arms to “My Girl”. I figured that would suit us better than anything else, so “My Girl” it is! He cried when I told him :)

My dad is a big fan of Paul Anka so I chose “Time of Your Life”.

my dad loves paul simon and i have so many memories of him singing his songs to my sister and i. so we are dancing to “diamonds on the souls of her shoes” which isnt slow and isnt really a father daughter dance but it is special to us!

but “brown eyed girl” is our first dance song first choice!

“I loved her first” - it’s a country song, but after you hear it you will HAVE to have it for your daddy/daughter. :)

We’re not doing a father/daughter dance, but I really like the Paul Simon “Father & Daughter” song. It’s really upbeat. The chorus is:
I’m gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you’ll always know
As long as one and one is two
There could never be a father
Who loved his daughter more than I love you

Ours is on the list. I know my dad well and we have a great affection for classic rock, so the choice was easy for me: In My Life by The Beatles. Basically, it has a great message and falls under our classic category. :-)

I also thought about dancing to “World on a String” by Sinatra. I think my dad has it all and is sitting on top of the world, and of course I feel the same way about my life, so that was a contender.

My cousin walked down the aisle to “I Love Her First” with her dad and it was really great–emotional–and I hate country music. ;-)

i would like “my heart belongs to daddy” by ella fitzgerald. i know i will be a big emotional mess during the wedding, so i would like the reception to be light and fun.

i’m basically letting him pick - he has a vision in his head and didn’t like any song that i suggested. he keeps telling me it’s going to be an ‘american classic’ - i have no clue

I am sure that your mom would love if you used “Brown eyed girl” even if it is her song, she will be happy to share it with you

I am using You are my Special Angel. It has always been our song since I was a little girl…Dad always called me his special angel :)

Is anyone else surprised to see “Daughters” by John Mayer on the list??? To me it just sounds like you better be good to your daughter or she will be a messed up chick…so don’t ruin her for me.

“Daughters” by John Mayer is a horrible Father/Daughter dance choice. The song itself is beautiful, but the song is about a father who emotionaly scarrs his daughter so that she is unable to have a healthy relationship with her boyfriend. Ouch.

Here is the perfect song (duet) for the father daughter dance…

Brown-eyed Girl is a great song, don’t get me wrong. But please listen to the lyrics before you settle one it. It’s about being IN love with a girl with brown eyes and getting it on behind the stadium…..not really about that father/daughter love. But ultimately the choice is yours…..good luck on the big day!

I agree with Jen, actually. Although I LOVE Brown-Eyed Girl, and it crossed my mind for my own father-daughter song, I realized that the lyrics were inappropriate for a father-daughter relationship. An incestual message isn’t what I’d go for. But you can for sure include it in your reception and have it for another song during the dance. I know I am (but I’ll be dancing to it with my F.H., he loves dancing to that song with me).

For my father-daughter dance, I’ve thought about it a lot and listened to countless songs, but I still don’t know what I want to do. He loves classic rock (and I do, too), especially the Eagles, Boston, CCR, and Led Zeppelin. But I have yet to find a song by them that I think is truly fitting. Any ideas? “In my Life” by the Beatles is a song I really like, too, so I might use that one. Although my favourite music is jazz, blues, and swing. Another song I’m thinking of doing is “When You’re Smiling” by Frank Sinatra. I just don’t want to do anything cliche, over-used, or sappy/mushy/gag-me. It has to be somewhat unique and personal, it has to have meaning to me and to my dad. Haha, I’m just so picky! Any new ideas would be fantabulous!!! :)
