Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Me Luvs to Shop

November 26th, 2006 @ 8:23 am by Mrs. Kiwi

Despite my love of shopping, I don’t really like Christmas shopping. It’s not that I don’t positively love to give gifts to people, I do. I love to see their faces when they get something they love, but would never have bought themselves. But while I pride myself on getting super cool items for people, it gets a little hard having to outdo yourself every year.

I spent 200 dollars in an hour today in a bookstore and online. While I spent that hour perusing Barnes and Noble with my dad, Mr. Kiwi was doing his Christmas shopping online. This brings to mind our present-buying playbook.

Mr. Kiwi and I have approached gift-buying in a simple way: I buy for my family, he buys for his. Although I usually pick out the gifts for both our families and he just forks over the cash for his, or has me give less rent than my usual share. Since we’ll be combining our accounts when we get married next November, this is the last year we’ll be doing that.

How does it work for you guys? Do you have a specific way of buying gifts and paying for them when it comes to your future in-laws?

We split the cost of buying all gifts for family

My FI’s family exchanges names so we only buy one gift for the name we drew. We also write a list of three items $50 or less (only 1 giftcard allowed!) and give that list to everyone so that you don’t know who drew your name and you are guaranteed to receive something you want. It makes things a lot easier.
When it comes to our parents, it gets trickier. We pretty much go halvsies on them, or I’ll buy my parents gifts and sign his name to them, and he’ll buy his parents’ gifts and sign my name to them. It really just depends on what we end up getting them.

We split things along family lines, though I usually get the ideas and do the legwork in acquiring things. Though Mr. Blueberry does like to have a lot of input–esp. since I don’t know his family as well as he does.

i try to find something for the bf’s mom and usually clear an idea through him for his input before i buy it. it helps a lot.

in the past, we usually bought something for each others’ parents with help from each other, separate from our own gifts to them. however, this year, we’re going to go in on bigger gifts from “both of us” since we are now engaged.

i love planning ahead, writing up lists, and thinking up options for each person on my list, so i used to help mr. lime as well. this year, i’ve been so busy and will be out of town for half of december, so mr. lime might have to take that role on.

Last year, I bought gifts for his Mom & Grandma (really, the only family in his life), and he bought gifts for my Mom & Stepdad. I think once we move in together, we’ll just go in together on gifts. Either that, or we will wait to do that until we are a married “unit”…lol.

We split some stuff up, and do some of the shopping together. It just depends on how hard the person is to shop for, really! Some gifts are from us as a couple, but some are still from us separately. For example, last year I knitted my mom a pair of socks, so FI gave her slippers.

He buys for his family and I buy for my parents. We shop together for my 3 siblings and my nephew.
