About Mrs. Pearl

Dress Envy [redux]

November 27th, 2006 @ 8:31 am by Mrs. Pearl

I previously blogged about my dress loves. And of the disaster that was the Brides Against Breast Cancer. After said disaster, I went to the Alfred Angelo store that was on my way to the freeway (heading to a fabulous lunch with my fabulous SFAMily) and tried on some dresses to figure out what looks good on me.

Good: Pick-ups, empire waist, high waist detailing (sashes, decorative beading, etc), veil underneath my hair.

Bad: Natural waist, long train (bustle would make the ass look gigantor-sized), veil on top of my hair

UGLY: Corseted boobs pushed up to my chin, arms

Now, most everything on the list can be fixed, with the exception of my arms…that would take much longer than I have. So, it’s all about masking and enhancing! Alfred Angelo had a darling dress that resembled a Jasmine Couture gown I’ve recently been eyeing.

This OG Jasmine combines a couple of my favorite things — lace (for that vintage look), and pickups (for that romantic, whimsical, yet fresh look). I was close to purchasing the Alfred Angelo dress, despite there not being an abundance of lace like the OG I so loved…and the price was right, considering they were having a sale and I could get it for $150 off.

But I waited.

You see, Jasmine has pretty much embraced the part of the bridal market that isn’t Size 2 or doesn’t love strapless dresses. They offer an option that is called “Temple Ready” where you can modify certain best-selling Jasmine gowns. Now, you don’t have to be Mormon or be married in the temple to take advantage. It’s really for anyone who prefers a bit more modesty. So, I started thinking…instead of wearing a bolero to pseudo-hide the arms and whatnot, I could buy the dress I *really* liked and modify it.

So, imagine the Jasmine gown above but with short sleeves and a 3 inch V-neck. Cute, no? Shockingly, the pickups don’t make my butt look bigger (they kind of hide it), while the sash makes my waist look smaller.

As I plan for it to look, it kind of reminds me of the Monique Lhuillier dresses with the lace bolero and sashes. And Jasmine is even smart enough to have a promotion called TailorMaid, where the samples of their gowns go to stores to fit all sizes they carry (4-28), so ALL sizes of women can see what their dresses look like on them and get the best fit. That’s what I’m talkin’ about!

Sooooooo…what do you think?!

I like it-it sounds great!
I had a lot of trouble finding a dress I wanted that looked appropriate. I am the definition of hourglass and most strapless dresses looked a mess. I spent hundreds getting my dress chopped up and altered to look how I wanted it to and it ended up looking good but I couldn’t help but think I could have done better (dress wise and price wise…)

I’m thinking about a Jasmine dress myself, this one:

Although it’s poly, not silk, and I did say I was only going to get silk. But the Jasmine Couture dresses in silk are out of my price range, I think (and I don’t like any of the styles as much.) Anyway, I do like that dress a LOT, except it has such an open back–but that can be changed, right? What a great system. And I’m looking forward to being able to try on a dress that will look like it fits my size 14 body. :)

Kudos on not buying that dress on an impulse. It is so hard to wait (at least it was for me) on buying a dress in order to ensure that you are getting one that you will truly love.

You and Pencils should look into having a dress made- get the fabric and look you want, generally for less. Call your local seamstress or for referrals try fabric stores and dry cleaners.

Ps- not a fan of pickups, but I like the way they’re done there, more like a swag. Love the lace.

I looked more on the Jasmine site, and Googled a bit, and found some prices, and there is one Couture dress I really like in a reasonable price point, but it’s a strapless and would need to be changed. Do you have any idea how much they charge for the Temple Ready service? This dress:

I love the lace, love the sash, would change it to a V-neck. How much, though? It’s already at the high end of my budget. Of course, I need to try it on, and talk to someone at the salon, but I like to go into these things with as much info as possible!

beautiful. and i am in admiration of your vision. i really wanted a dress with off the shoulder sleeves, but i settled for a strapless, since that’s practically the only type of dress out there in abundance. we will hopefully add sleves, but it won’t be the dress i imagined. (but that’s totally okay.)

I bought a Jasmine couture dress for my wedding and it cost a GRIP, I am looking to sell it now. Its absolutely beautiful I paid $1500 for it. Any advice on where I can get the best bang for the buck with it?
