The tryptophan haze has worn off for long enough for me to blog about my Thanksgiving.
Usually, every Thanksgiving, Mr. Pearl and I spend our holiday apart. I go home to my parents’ house in Nevada and he stays in town with his parents. This year, my parents decided to take my little brother and sister to Disneyland around Thanksgiving time, so they’d be in town. Soooo…it was up to me to cook a Thanksgiving meal.
Did I mention that we have no dishwasher?
That we have a one bedroom apartment?
That our apartment is very sparsely furnished.
So, not only did I need to cook, but we also had to get the apartment in order!
The meal was, in short, amazing! Not to toot my own horn (*toot toot*), but it was probably the best Thanksgiving meal I’ve ever had. Mr. Pearl was responsible for the turkey, which he smoked in his smoker. I made everything else - mashed potatoes with onion and cheese (recipe can be found in the Bride and Groom First and Forever Cookbook), stuffing, corn, cauliflower bake casserole, homemade gravy (from Food Network site), and two pumpkin pies (also from the B&G F&F Cookbook).
Besides the meal being so delicious, it was also a great feeling being the hostess of my first holiday with Mr. Pearl. In our four and a half years together, it was one of the last things we *haven’t* done together. Besides the thrill of hosting a successful event, it also made me think a lot about how holidays are going to be when he and I have children. I love the holiday season and I’m also pretty traditional when it comes to them. It’s nice to know I have a partner who believes in the same and will help me carry on important holiday traditions with our children.
The one bummer of the day was that we could not include his parents in our holiday celebration. His parents do not approve of me…which is strange because, for about a year, I had a good relationship with his mom. Then almost overnight, the relationship disappeared. I have always been envious of the women who can call up their MIL/FMIL and have convos about nothing or have comingled family holidays. Maybe one day, that can be us.
