About Open Question

Dear WeddingBee,

I am having two wedding ceremonies about 6 months apart from each other. I will be wearing a simple, A-line, cuff neckline, strapless gown with matching ivory colored sash (David’s Bridal model T8778).

Open Question: Wearing a Dress Twice : wedding advice wedding dress David david.jpg

I wonder if you or other readers could make suggestions on how I could get this dress professionally altered to make it look different for the second wedding ceremony. Have you heard of other people doing this before, and if so, do you have any referrals for tailors in Southern California that I could contact? Any design or style suggestions to “makeover” my dress would be helpful. Thank you for your help!

You can add straps and beading to your dress. Also you can remove the sash. I have an alteration lady if you need a recommendation. good luck!

One way to alter it is to have it bustled and wear it that way the entire time for the second wedding.

Another way might be to add a lacy overlay/jacket/shrug type of thing, and wear your sash over that (think sprpro on the knot).

Even wearing your hair differently or wearing different accessories could make a dramatic difference.

How lucky you get to wear your dress twice! Even if you didn’t have it altered, I think it’s lovely you get to wear it more than once!

I’m doing the same thing: one wedding in winter and one in summer. For the winter wedding I’ve knitted a lace silk shawl (although I really like the idea of a fitted shrug). For the summer wedding I’m wearing a coloured silk sash across the waist with matching shoes.

i think that changing the neckline could be really dramatic… even just adding straps and scooping the neckline could be beautiful.

I would change the sash out to a different color and bustle the dress. Perhaps buy a gorgeous brooch and put it in the ribbon (in a Monique Lhuillier-esque way).
Another suggestion would be to wear your hair differently as well :)

Good luck!

Mrs. Bee

You could buy a sash in another color, tie your sash in another way (a bow in the back, to the side, et.). love the idea of adding a brooch or shrug/bolero as well. good luck! :)

I agree with Mrs. Bee.. just changing the sash makes a big difference. Wore the same dress and ended up switching sashes during reception because I couldn’t think of a nice way to bustle it. Everyone thought I was wearing two different dresses.

A good seamstress may even be able to alter the sillouette of the gown. It looks like it could go to a trumpet/mermaid shape pretty easily!

I had the exact same dress for my wedding. I added a lace bolero which gave a different look to the dress.

If the 2nd wedding is more casual why not chop it to tea length and turn the sash into a ribbon halter? Or make it a mermaid and add either a lace overshirt or bolero.

Thanks for all your recommendations. Now, does anyone have the contact number of awesome tailors I could contact? Joesee22, can I get the name/number of your alteration lady? Thank you to everyone!

oooh I would cut off the bottom so it’s tea length and add a short lace trim or have it the same length but have the bottom be all lace. Or shorten it to the knee and keep the long sash.
