DIY (Sports) Garter

Miss. Hibiscus’ entry about sports garters made me think about mine. While we probably won’t have a garter toss, a sports garter seems like a nice surprise for Mr. Peach after the wedding is over. I went to the website and found the Michigan one:

I really liked it, but I just couldn’t swallow the price ($34.95!!). So I set out to make my own! I went to A.C. Moore to purchase my materials (lace, yellow ribbon, blue ribbon, elastic) for a whopping grand total of $3.95!!

Cut two pieces of lace and both the ribbons about twice the width of your thigh. Cut the elastic so that it is a comfortable fit around your thigh.

First I sewed together two pieces of lace back to back to form one piece of lace with a centerline:

Then I sewed on one edge of the blue ribbon to the lace, where the centerline was formed, like below (so that it appears that one side of the lace will be longer than the other).

Then I added the yellow ribbon (*NOTE: I should have added the yellow ribbon to the blue ribbon BEFORE adding it to the lace. It would have been easier):

I got so excited I forgot to take some pictures >_< sowieee!! But it's really simple. You sew the OTHER side of the blue ribbon to the lace and then string the elastic through. You can use a safety pin to help you guide it through. Then sew up the two ends together and viola~! Not too shabby, eh? I also saved $30! woohoo~

It lacks the sports pin, but eh, whatever. I did find the exact same Michigan football pin for $4.95 so maybe I’ll add it later.

Side Note: So for those of you who don’t keep up with college football - Michigan lost against Ohio state (I have to say, Ohio State played very well). But there is still hope. Many Michigan fans are cheering for the UCLA Bruins to beat USC. Hahaha~

Did you use a sewing machine to do any of this? I’d like to try, but I don’t have a machine.

It’s my plan to try to make a coca-cola garter. My FI’s an addict. Also, someone on eBay also makes sports and other custom garters for around $10.

Too cute!!! I was planning on coming up with a method for doing this myself, but since you posted these great instructions I’ll just use yours :-)

I sewed it by hand! It def would have been faster and the creases would have come out nicer with a sewing machine, but yeah I don’t have a sewing machine either…

yours actually looks a lot better than the store bought one. i like it.

as far that game went, at least i didn’t cry hot, angry tears this year. ;-) they were good but if not for that last penalty, we would have won

GREAT garter. I was actually going to purchase off the sports site too!! BUt I love saving money and I love how your’s came out! I am confused though about sewing two pieces of lace together and then threading the elastic through. Did you sew the two pieces together by making a pocket for the elastic (?) and then slide it through? :-\ Also, for the blue ribbon, did you sew onto lace on both edges of the ribbon or down the middle of the ribbon?
Sorry. I want to make sure of the directions before I take on such a task. Thank you!

LaJuan- hopefully this will answer your question. if not i’ll try it with ms paint. ^_^ the two peices of lace that are sewed together (back to back) have nothing to do with the threading the elastic through. this was done simply to create one piece of lace. the pocket for the elastic is formed by the blue ribbon and lace (now one piece). so i first sewed one edge of the blue ribbon to the lace and then later sewed the opposite edge of the blue ribbon to the same piece of lace, creating a pocket or tunnel for the elastic to travel through. does this make more sense? hmm re-reading my directions, i should have used the word “edge” instead of “side.” feel free to ask more questions or email me if you have any trouble: peach@weddingbee.com!
