About Open Question

Dear Weddingbee,

I have a tattoo on my left shoulder blade i.e. I will not be wearing a strapless dress. I have a couple of ideas for wedding dresses, but I wanted to know others’ input on what kind of dresses I should be looking at. Just because I have a tattoo doesn’t mean I want to get married in full-coverup gear. Ya know? What are those of you with visible tattoos wearing/doing?

and

My fiancÆ’© and I currently live together but I am very picky, so even though we are engaged, I don’t have an engagement ring. We’ve been looking around and came upon ¢¢â€š¬…”man-made¢¢â€š¬? diamonds. They’re cheaper and look just as nice, but are they not as valuable because they’re not ¢¢â€š¬…”real¢¢â€š¬? diamonds? Any thoughts?

Alisa

I have a tattoo on my left shoulder blade, too. I can’t imagine not wearing a strapless dress (straps bother me too much), so I’m getting theater grade cover up to cover up my tattoo. I love my tattoo, but I don’t want it in my wedding pictures.

My 2 cents on the value of man-made diamonds is that the re-sale value on real diamonds is notoriously low, so I don’t think it’s that important. If your ring is something you’re going to wear for a long time and then pass down/keep in the family, I don’t think monetary value is very relevant, the diamond industry just wants you to believe that more expensive is always better!

I’m completely with Felicity on this one!! Personally, I’m not all that adament about having a mined diamond. And man-made diamonds are only a fraction of the cost, which I love. I think they are just as pretty as a mined diamond is! And I’m not all about the cost….as long as it’s sparkly, I’m happy! So I could really care less about having an expensive ring. As long as we both like it, and it fits in our budget, I’m happy.

As for the tattoo, my friend has one that covers her shoulder, because she needed something that would cover the tattoo she had previously…heh. But for her wedding, she had someone hide it with makeup…and it worked phenomenally well. It can run expensive depending on where you go.

i don’t think there’s anything wrong with tattoos being in pictures, quite honestly! if your tattoos have personal meaning to them, why hide it? it’s art showcased on the best slate of all slates - the human body! - why not flaunt it?

if you are concerned about offending people - hey, it’s your wedding. offend all you want. ;-)

Re: tattoos, check out ww.jkpblog.com and scroll down to Emily & Aaron. The bride wore a strapless dress that showed off her tattoos and you can see the photographer was in heaven with how beautiful and unique she was.

Hi Alisa,

you could go for a boatneck or vneck style dress that covers your shoulder, but i’d also look into tattoo coverup makeup in case it peeps out. of course you could always go with a style that has a shrug/bolero/sleeves as well (but that’d still require makeup under the dress). Good luck with your dress search!

I’ve recently been looking into manmade diamonds so I don’t know that much about them, but will write about them when I find out more info. :)

My maid of honor has a tattoo on her shoulder blade, and she is going to cover it up by air-brushing it.

yeah - as long as the diamond is as sparkly as you want it to be~ mined or not~
Moisannite is supposed to have much more fire and brilliance than diamonds

I think the ring is just a symbolism of the promise and commitment of a life together. Stay focus on the symbolism of the ring rather than the value of the ring. My ring is a pretty pink sapphire that’s affordable and unique!

mrs. b’s dress suggestions were great. if you really want to wear something shoulder baring anyway, maybe you can do test runs of cover makeup to make sure it looks natural (and bring a shrug or wrap just in case you get rub-off).

Alisa,
My fiance and I just got engaged after months of searching for the right ring. I was dead set on finding a diamond alternative because of the environmental and social reasons to not buy a real diamond and because I thought it was outrageous to spend so much on something so little. Be careful, I found out the synthetically created diamonds are little more than cubic zirconia. Moissanite may be a good option for you. It was the best thing we found. You may also consider estate or second hand stones.

p.s. After much research I discoved legit diamonds (not conflict) are actually very important to certain economies. I also found out that the De Beers company spends millions of dollars to minimize any environmental impact they have and to purchase large amount of land as wilderness preserves in the countries they mine it. I figured we would be doing more good than harm buying a diamond. He proposed to me with a gorgeus princess cut stone. I love people’s reaction when they find out we are now engaged and I can’t imagine it would be the same without an actual diamond.
